Walter Cunningham Sr.
is a poor farmer that is affected from the Great Depression. ”Why does he pay you like that?”(Lee,Pg.21) Scout asks Atticus why Mr. Cunningham payed him in stovewood, and food. “Because that’s the only way he can pay me. He has no money.”(Lee, Pg.21) Atticus replies saying that Walter Cunningham Sr. is out of money and struggling to make ends meet when it comes to financial securities. We later see him at the prison trying to lynch Tom Robinson but Atticus is there to prevent that. He than disperses the men at the jail when Scout’s politeness persuades him not to do it. Many motives are shown because of this. Mr. Cunningham could of have been influenced by money or by personal reasons. He could of have done it because he thought it might be ‘easy’ cash. He’s not the only man that works on a farm and has
hardships.
Tom Robinson is a black male with a wife and kids. He has an injury with his left hand from a machinery incident. With his left hand almost useless, Tom has to do more work to finish one ‘project’ on the cotton field. Tom Robinson walks by the Ewell residents every day and Mayella, Bob Ewell’s daughter, offers him to help her with doing some work/chores.
Tom Robinson is then accused of sexually assaulting Mayella and goes to court. Atticus Finch is appointed by Judge Taylor to defend Tom. Atticus defends Tom with the best of his ability but Tom is found guilty. Tom is later revealed that he was shot while trying to escape the prison. Tom worked and worked to sustain them with food, water, and shelter for his family while he was with them. Tom worked on a cotton field. “Farmers, the crash hit them the hardest.”(Lee,Pg.21) Atticus told this to Scout which explains the hardships of the farmers and their employment. Tom Robinson's wife, Helen Robinson, has now gained employment from Link Deas. The Great Depression has affected everyone, not just with money.
Bob Ewell is a father of over five kids. He lives beside the dump and doesn’t have an impressive income. Bob Ewell drinks and is later known that he beats Mayella and accused Tom of sexually assaulting her. After the court case, Bob broke into Judge Taylor’s house, verbally harassed Helen Robinson, and threatened Atticus to get him “if it’s the last thing I do.”(Lee,Pg.21) Bob Ewell later attacks Jem and Scout, Atticus’s children, and accidentally kills self when tripping over a root under a tree. Bob accused Tom so he can look like a hero to the town and maybe obtain a job. But, Maycomb realised what Bob did to Mayella and now the residents of the town like him less. The whole story escalated by that one proclaim about a black male.
The beginning of the story explains about the town and the state of it. The crippling economy has affected everyone of every employment. From a layer to a broke farmer to a black male has been affected drastically. Money is a powerful ally and a most dangerous opponent. The idea that a piece of paper can determine if you can feed your family is baffling. An economic catastrophe like the Great Depression can affect someone’s thinking. A father like Walter, Tom, and Atticus would work themselves to the point of injury to keep their family fed. Bob Ewell had a poor life before the Great Depression happened. So, the drop of the economy wouldn’t affect someone who has no money already. Throughout the book, the detail on how money, anger towards a group of people and secrets can lead a town that looked peaceful to a town of segregation and confrontation towards a different colour of people and thinking that it’s just. Exactly what happened in the book happens in real life. The end of the book is explained in the beginning and we can see what happens after all the events. We can also barely see what happened after the death of Bob Ewell and the lives of Maycomb as a town.
