Walter Mity: A Short Story
“Walter, I thought I told you to change that light bulb.” Mrs. Mitty said scornfully at her husband. Paying no attention to his wife, Walter walked right past he and into their sitting room. I’ll get to it, Walter thought as he sat down on his recliner. His gaze travels to the fish tank on his left. Walter stares at the fish, watching them pop in and out of the plants in the tank. He keeps his gaze locked on a black fish, which kept swimming in and out of a decoration of a sunken ship. “Walter! Walter Mitty, this light bulb isn’t going to change itself.”… “Sir, she’s taking on water heavily. We have got an hour at most before she sinks.” The deckhand had a look of panic on his face when he talked to Captain Mitty, captain of the RMS Titanic. Mitty looks out of …show more content…
The band from dinner was playing in the corner while everyone was fighting for a spot on the boats. Mitty and Stevens walk over to the lifeboats where the women and children were getting on. Mitty stands on the railing. “Attention! All women and children on the lifeboats, regardless of the level of class! Double, or even triple the amount of people on the boats! I do not care if you are disgusted by who is beside you. Would you rather die?” After Mitty speaks, the lifeboats become filled up over max capacity with the women and children and are lowered into the water. The ship was moaning, and she was starting to tip upwards. The end was near, Captain Mitty could sense it. “Men next Stevens! Get everyone else on the remaining boats and paddle out of here! She’s going down quicker than expected so you have to rush. Go boys, go!” The young deckhand looks at Mitty. “Sir, what about you? You deserve a spot on the boat. It is your ship sir.” Mitty shakes his head and pats the young man on the shoulder. “Not me Stevens. It’s my ship, I’m going down with her. Farewell boys, I’ll see you guys behind the pearly gates.” Mitty puts on his captain’s hat, and walks towards the steering

“We lay flat on the deck and covered our eyes. But our sailors were yelling – ‘Get up! Stand up! Let the Japanese see you’re just women and children.” Sheila explains to Rick that a spotlight was focused on her ship. They all stood up and they heard the sound of crackers, the Japanese were firing at the ship of women and children. “Then sailors were yelling ‘Jump for it! Jump for it!” “And then there was this deafening noise. The whole ship rose from the water and crashed on its side. It lay there like a wounded animal spilling oil, instead of blood” Sheila calmly recounts the events that happened that day to Rick. She describes in detail of the horror that happened. This cuts to a voice, young Sheila, whimpering a few lines from the hymn ‘Jerusalem’. The sound of young Sheila’s voice fills the room and this is meant to really connect with the audience and make them feel as if they were really…

According to Corporal Harrell (Phillips, 2017, August 20), two torpedoes struck the ship in the night, the explosion created a power outage, and fire was the only source of light. For four and half days the crew was floating in the ocean trying to survive. During the four days, crewmembers would lose their lives in the ocean. Some died from drowning, dehydration, starvation, or sharks. The crew tried to stay together floating in a group but throughout the day, sharks would eat them. The life jackets lacked buoyancy so the crewmembers consistently swam until they drowned. Hunger and starvation made crewmembers hallucinate until losing their lives searching for food or water under the ocean. Finally, on the fourth day a U.S. military aircraft on a routine mission saw and reported the crew in the ocean. Eventually, the destroyer, USS Cecil Doyle and the aircraft rescued the USS Indianapolis (CA 35) crew. Now that the sacrifice and service of the crew has been discussed, this paper will now discuss command…

To start with, Holling Hoodhood “friends” would be gone because he participated in the play and he wore tights and while the whole school came and laughed at him and he didn’t lose it. Imagine that if that happened to you, it would be horrible right. But then someone forgets their line right in front of you and you stand there and wait tell he says something. It would be funny for the crowd but inside it's more frightening that a rattlesnake(well maybe no but still). This fades into the next example, after the show he had to run in the cold all the way to the sports store. Holling Hoodhood went there to see the one and only Mickey Mantle and the Mickey looked at him and laughed at him because he was wearing tights and threw his ball that Holling Hood gave to him to sign and Holling stared at at him with a blank face and left. So the last one for this topic is about the story of the shipwrecked to the bottom of the earth. If the Captain didn’t keep his mind to getting to Antarctica, you can call him dead meat. In other words if got distracted by something he would of died. For this you have to be concentrated and if anything at one second goes wrong you're a gonner. The captain must of blocked out everything everyone says cause he was always strict. For an example, when the men were joking around on land (more so snow) he would be strict. and let's say it a very tense…

Guy Montag opened his eyes with a start. Fiery images slipped in and out of his mind as he slowly exited the dreamy realms of his subconscious. Brightest of all he saw the number 451, burning like the fire he knew it represented, obscuring the rest until it too faded into smoke and he was awake. Gradually gaining awareness of his surroundings, he pulled his blanket tighter around him as he shivered in the early morning chill.…

Both eventually went motionless and without the capability to cry anymore, for now they were in disbelief that their husbands have abandoned them and left there to manage the family affairs. After this interval of standing at the dock both women decided to go home, but oddly they returned the next day to the same exact spot in hopes that this was only a dream and they would awaken from this horrifying nightmare. Marilyn and Jane even brought a picnic basket and had lunch there; both packed lunches for themselves and their husbands with perhaps a gleam of hope for their spouses’ arrival. However, the sun started to dim until night fell upon Marilyn and Jane to a point of complete darkness, and the only sounds were the collapse of the sea’s waves against the rocks. They did this day after day, month after month. It had been 429 days since the men had left for war and now it's February 12, 1911. Jane and Marilyn were doing their usual ritual, sitting by the harbor, having lunch, when abruptly a cannon goes off. To their astonishment, they look out into the midst of the ocean and see the USS Constitution battling another vessel. The soldiers had run out of all ammunition and forced to use the life rafts to go ashore. Marilyn and Jane had no knowledge of this and began to weep because they witnessed the ship go up into an inferno and sink down into the…

Once the investigators had finished eating up the lamb leg they continued to search her house for any other clues. They searched every single room of the house. Three hours later they started gathering their materials. “Well Mrs. Maloney it doesn’t looked like we have came to a conclusion on exactly what happened to your husband.” One of the police officers told her. “Oh, but you will still continue to search for answers right?” Mrs. Maloney questioned him. “It doesn’t look like we have come to much luck in this investigation. Goodnight now.” The police officer replied. The investigators and the police officer were now heading out of the house and getting into their cars and going away. Mrs. Maloney walked closed the front door and walked back into the living room. “Gosh, I don’t know what I would have done if I was caught.” Mrs. Maloney thought to…

The story is drawn out to be an adventure between what starts off as a group of four men tackling the five oceans, and what later becomes a battle for survival as these men become true comrades. These men must not only work together to arrive at their final destination, but to legitimately stay alive. “It was more than a mere recognition of what was best for the common safety. There was surely it in a quality that was personal and heartfelt.” (Crane, pg. 1004)It didn’t have to be said aloud. It was a mutual feeling that every individual aboard the small raft felt, but instead preferred to keep it to themselves in order to not bring any disturbance to the concentration that they were putting into this voyage. The captain was treated with the utmost respect due to his position, but he never made it a fact to display his superiority above his companions.…

The boarding of the boat described at the end of Chapter Three symbolized the escape from communist ideals and the passengers represented the Vietnam escapees. Throughout pages 56 through 59 Vietnamese constantly call for the boatman to wait for them. The boatman said, “Get in quickly if you want to cross. This is the last run.” This showed how communism was coming quickly and escape was not a luxury that would remain much longer. Each time the boat prepared to leave someone called for it to wait and let them board. First was the woman with her basket of potatoes, then the traveling salesman with his suitcase. As the boat finally pulled out of the bay “a chill mist evaporated off the water” When the boat left another young woman called for the boatman to wait but it was too late as they were already underway. While she cried, “Boatman, ho boatman! ... curls of smoke fused with the clouds, erasing the horizon line.” She was too late to escape Communism and the ideals it brought with it. The Smoke had engulfed the “distant bank” throwing it into…

Fredrick Fleet was the workman on guard on the Titanic on April 14. Fleet, had warned the personnel on the ship’s control deck to look out for icebergs that night, yet nobody was at the control panel that fateful night (McPherson 6). The Titanic was thought to be unsinkable when it was built in 1911. “More than 2,200 people were now aboard the Titanic including 1,300 passengers” (Senan 16). The location the Titanic deported from was Great Britain and it was headed to New York. After three long days of sailing on the North Atlantic, they stopped in Ireland. A few days later, the ship crashed into an iceberg that had made it’s way into North Atlantic from Greenland (Fahey 4). Many people went back to their rooms to get their valuables from down below (Lord 60). Most historians say that they don’t know the exact number of passengers that were on the Titanic because, there was no accurate list of them. The Titanic was a major disaster but could have been prevented if workers were at their stations.…
