Are principals the most accountable people for education? When looking at the methods of improving education, much more emphasis than ever before have been put on the professionalism of teachers, the advance of teaching equipment, and the effort of the students. However, in Want to Fix Schools? Go to The Principal’s Office, the editorial of New York Times, the author David Leonhardt points out the importance of principals to the success of schools. With statistics and emotional stories, Leonhardt effectively convinced readers that principals are the most significant factor in determining the quality level of education. Nevertheless, when the author applies his logical appeals, he problematically ignores the complexity of the education situation …show more content…
In the beginning of the article, the author describes that the grades of Maya were so terrible that she was out of the path to graduate from high school. Then, with the development of the article, the author tells readers that George Jones took power in Kenwood high school. Under his term of office, he encouraged teachers to write their own curriculum guides instead of buying outside ones; he explored extra curriculum by adding a full orchestra, a jazz band, and several sports teams in order to make the school an enjoyable environment for students. With the change of the school, Maya found her interest in the softball team, made more friends and achieved more energy in study. After one year, Maya was on the right track to graduate. The progress of Maya presents the essential function of the principal to the development of school and the students. Meanwhile, using the story of the same people also increases the consistency and integrity of the article. Thus, this story not only attracts readers’ attention, but also emotionally convinces readers that principals are truly accountable for their schools’

    Chapter 8 of Creating the Opportunity to Learn by A. Wade Boykin and Pedro Noguera discusses why some schools are making more progress than others in closing the achievement gap. The chapter describes how two schools that are similar in the demographics and challenges hindering achievement, can have two different results in their efforts to close the achievement gap. One school saw improvements because they recognized the problems and implemented research based strategies to help all students be successful.     John Gatto’s “Against School” is a persuasive essay arguing both the ineffectiveness and negative outcomes of today’s public school system. Not only does Gatto provide credibility with his experience as a teacher, but he also presents historical evidence that suggests that the public school system is an outdated structure, originally meant to dumb down students as well as program them to be obedient pawns in society.     In “Five Ways to Fix America’s Schools,” an op-ed article that was published in The New York Times on June 8th, 2009, Harold O. Levy, a former chancellor of New York City schools, contends America’s educational system is no longer the best in the world. Levy comes up with several ways that the American education can return to being the juggernaut that it once was, and he provides five specific ways to repair or “fix” it. First, he states that we need to raise the age of compulsory education to 19. Second, Levy pushes the point of enforcing stricter truancy punishments. The Obama Administration created the $4.3 billion Race to the Top fund to encourage states to implement performance pay systems and other changes (The White House Staff). With that being said, almost every politician, school official, educator and citizen has developed his or her own views and strategies to improve or “fix” the education system. Despite this, there has been little data generated to support their efforts. The most consistent data points to the impact of high-quality teachers in the classroom. This along with the Race to the Top fund has opened the door again for merit pay or performance pay. Merit pay ties pay increases to school test performance, evaluation of the teacher’s in-class performance and professional efforts (Goldhaber 2008). Merit pay is a solution drawn from the business world, and is based on the belief that rewarding effective teachers and encouraging them to work harder will increase student learning (Holland 2005). Most people agree that the success of our education system and schools depend primarily on having high-quality teachers in the classroom, but some argue that the responsibilities are not the teachers along and include other outside factors (Conner 2013).
