Author Keith M. Parsons’s purpose was to briefly summarize the differences between high school and college to his future students. Parson begins his article by stating a few things that will guide you into becoming a successful student. He first wants to explain the difference between a teacher and a professor, “Teachers are evaluated on the basis of learning outcomes, generally as measure by standardized tests. If you don’t learn, then your teacher is blamed. However, things are very different for a university professor. It is no part of my job to make you learn. There are many reasons why a student may be struggling with reading comprehension. One possibility could be the student’s low proficiency in reading fluency. When students struggle to decipher the text they are not focusing on gaining knowledge from what is being read. Leading to the fact that all of the students cognitive ability is being focused into properly reciting the correct words while little effort it put into the meaning of what is being read (Woolley, 2010). Another possible reason for reading comprehension problems may also be related to a lack of prior experiences or a lower socio-economic environment (Jitendra & Gajria, 2011). To be skilled in reading comprehension, it is essential for students to be able to associate the text with their own prior knowledge. Welcome to Mahar Regional High School, home of the Senators, where the football team is taken more seriously than preparing the students for the MCAS test. I can remember entering my freshman year and walking into my first class, English, where my teacher spent the first half hour of class talking about how great the picks were that the quarterback was throwing at practice. I loved the home town pride that my school held. There were multiple pep rallies and blue and red were worn daily. Everyone in town went to the games on Friday nights and homecoming was more important than Christmas. The only thing that my school lacked was actually preparing students for the next big step in their lives, college. The four years I spent at Mahar were some of the best years of my life and I did learn just about as much as any other kid at any other high school. The most important thing that I didn’t learn was what to expect at college and even more importantly, how to write a college essay. Essays were important in the English and writing classes, but I was told what to write and I mastered the art of putting on paper exactly what would impress my teacher to get an A. English at Mahar was really black and white. The teacher shared their opinion on what they were teaching and as I moved up to my senior year I began noticing that there wasn’t many options for students to discuss their opinions and say what they truly thought on what they were learning. It led to me realizing that as my peers and I moved up into college we wouldn’t really be prepared for discussion style classes and opinion based papers that we would have to write. The only books I could understand were the ones for elementary kids because of their easy vocabulary. I used to check those out and I always had a dictionary next to me in case I didn’t know something, and when there were times I couldn’t understand anything I used Google translate at home. Many students go to college with the sole intention to get their degree, become employed, and earn a higher salary. Although sociology professors Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa point out “36% of college graduates showed no improvement in critical thinking, complex reasoning, or writing after four years of college” (Practical Argument 38), this doesn’t mean college is a waste of time. Not everyone who attends college takes it seriously. There are the slackers, and there are the people who realize they’re paying for an education. That 36% might still be trapped with their high school mindset: goofing around, skipping class, partying, and not completing assignments to the best of their ability. After my first week of the Summer Bridge Program at Penn St-Abington, I learned a lot about the differences between high school and college. I really understand in high school that you must be there during the allotted hours, success rides on the teacher, and that we can get away from not reading the text for class and in college you have more freedom, harder courses, and longer hours of studying. We learned how to become an efficient and effective learner. What I learned from that lesson is that, I have to focus much more and study much harder then what I did in high school. Also that college is no joke since it’s a privilege and that high school is a right that we have to go. To me the most effective strategy I learned is how to become a better listener and how to be a successful student in college.
