Warnings In The Kite Runner
Blood. Violence. Sex. All things that are seen daily through media, or real life. For some people, this reality becomes too difficult to deal with, resulting in a sensitivity to a certain trigger. Because of this, many people are encouraging schools and colleges to enforce trigger warnings. However this defeats the purpose of learning. The purpose of learning is to take in new information and learn from it. When warnings are set in place for learning, some students are going to miss out on the opportunity to learn new lessons. There are, also, many ways that trigger warnings can be taken advantage of. By enforcing trigger warnings, we as a society would be encouraging people to shy away from things because they are considered too hard to handle. …show more content…
Especially in a college classroom setting, the number of students can near hundreds. All of these students have one professor trying to meet all their needs and teach a class at the same time. It is highly unrealistic for a student to expect his own problems to be dealt with. Why should a professor make a specialized plan for him when the rest of the class is doing the assigned work? The book “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini is the story of two boys growing up together, but having very different views about the world. In the book, Amir and Hassan are growing up in Afghanistan together, but face bullies often. When Hassan is brutally raped by one of these boys, Amir stands and does nothing. There is no warning of this scene in the book’s description. A student reading this book may reach this part and read it, and shortly after, become stricken with panic or flashbacks. In the same moment, another student may read the book and become uncomfortable when reading the scene. Both students are reading the same material, but have very different reactions. Which student deserves special treatment for their condition? This also begs the question of whose responsibility a trigger warning is. Is it the author writing the book, the professor teaching it, or the student reading the book? No matter the answer, it is almost impossible to tailor each student’s needs without …show more content…
Parents are notorious for trying to keep their kids sheltered from the hardships of the world. In the article it states that, “a student at Crafton Hills College and her parents called for several graphic novels she’d been assigned to be banned for what the student called their ‘shocking’ sex and violence.” The article does not mention the background of the family or why they considered normal aspects of society ‘shocking’. If one turns on a t.v. there is most likely going to be media displaying sex, violence, and much more. In a school environment, a student is able to take this information, have it explained and gather more facts on it. By denying their children the right to learn about sensitive topics, the parents are making it that much harder for their kids to live in today’s world.
Trigger warnings place a barrier on learning. Not only do people lying about having triggers affect people who actually have a mental health disorder, but a child cannot learn to overcome their trigger if they are not exposed to it in their lives. A classroom setting is an extremely important resource for children to overcome fears. It is not only safe, but accepting of differences. Professors should not have to censor themselves, and therefore restrict

This quote is important to the novel because it represents the crucial point in Amir’s life. At that moment, Amir is fighting against Assef, but he’s also sacrificing his life to save Sohrab as like Hassan sacrificed himself for Amir 26 years ago. Although Amir is badly beaten, he actually feels relieved as the guilt that he’s been suffering all his life has now been atoned for. From this quote, I learn that without being able to forgive yourself for your mistakes, you can’t have a fulfilled life. And, forgiveness only comes when you have truly tried to atone for your…

Passage Analysis 1.Sometimes home isn't always the most comforting place that we’d like it to be. Sometimes we feel trapped and in prison, with no escape. “Those who got out always left something themselves behind” this means that they must leave a piece of their character or who they were behind to live a better life. This represents a cultural idea, anybody who has ever lived in a bad neighborhood, has had to leave a piece of himself behind. 2.…

In some cases trigger warnings not only warn students but censor valuable material that is important to the class. In the article, “CON: ‘Trigger Warnings’ Impose Censorship in the Name of Sensitivity” it states “Or they could censor the course material in the name of sensitivity. Small acts of censorship could lead to much larger ones. Already, trigger warnings have been applied to such works as ‘The Great Gatsby,’ ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and other classics.” Here the author Donald Down, who is a researcher at the…

Trigger warnings seem like an escape from horrific memories and the, "...requests from students..." have been increasing rapidly. (Medina 92). The students want "...to avoid certain articles..." that can be obtained by trigger warnings. Trigger warnings may accommodate some students- the ones with traumas- but unfortunately, it limits the deep discussions of the class curriculum. Therefore, trigger warnings takes away the rights of many students just to accommodate one…

Providing percentages from 2013 and 2014 mental-health surveys, the rate of emotional distress reported by students is proof that whatever changes are occurring might be more detrimental than beneficial. The constant use of “trigger warnings” and zero tolerance of microaggressions are teaching students the wrong ideas. Trigger warnings are what professors are to use when wanting to alert the class of material that might cause any emotional distraught and microaggressions are word choices that could be taken in the wrong way, although have no intentions of being malicious. For universities to enforce such policies shows the extent of the sensitivity within our young adults. College students are typical 18 years and older.…

Despite the benefits that associated with providing trigger warnings, there are some potential drawbacks. One argument is that trigger warnings may be too protective and result in failing to fully prepare students for their lives after college. Lukianoff and Haidt (2015) argue that rather than supporting students, trigger warnings provide too much protection and result in a lack of preparation for professional work settings that demand, "intellectual engagement with people and ideas one might find uncongenial or wrong" (pg. 5). While that is not the intention behind trigger warnings, it could be an unintentional consequence. When examining trigger warnings, Leiter (2016) discusses “easy cases” such as students who are legally entitled to trigger…

Nationwide, educators are implementing the usage of trigger warnings to shield emotional and physical pain from civilians that may be fragile. Trigger warning or viewer discretion are acts of kindness that help protect people with histories of conditions. In article that was published in August of 2015, “Trigger warnings don’t hinder freedom of expression: they expand it” by Lindy West, she states that “a trigger warning is letting the audience know about potentially disturbing content” (West). West also discusses psychiatric conditions that people may have, like PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), sexual assault, and more. A common example of a trigger warning could be when college professor is showing a video that holds content that might be sensitive to rape victims. Before showing the video, the professor should say, “Trigger warning- rape”. Because of the professor’s trigger warning, the student’s that may have been sexually assaulted now have time to mentally prepare themselves for video ahead.…

Why go to college if you don’t want to learn? If we censor everything harmful then we become more ignorant of the world. The article mentions cognitive behavioral therapy which teaches good critical thinking skills. It offers good solution to trigger warnings. I think this therapy needs to be use more often because it teaches us to think more objectively rather than subjectively. Think subjectively distorts our way of thinking especially in the classroom. This way of thinking offers a solution to overcoming our fears and hypersensitivity. It is unfair that teachers and administration have to make adjustment to their course because someone feels offended. I find some of the examples given where people are being charged with harassment completely ridiculous. I believe by coddling the American mind is a disservice to students. We don’t live in a Utopia where everyone says nice things. The sooner students learn this, the better of they will be in the…

As a society we want our young people to be literate, thoughtful, and caring human beings, however we also attempt to control what they read, listen to, and see–and ultimately what they think and care about. One can understand the instinct to need to "protect" children from dangerous or disturbing ideas and information, but this combination of the multiplicity of values and the concern for young people's minds…

Censorship is caused when books, movies, etc. are examined, and unacceptable parts are suppressed or the whole thing is banned. Schools nationwide have been banning books due to reasons such as racial issues, sexual explicit content, religious affiliations, violence, political bias, encouragement of “damaging” lifestyles, and etc. Often it is argued that banning books protects students from being exposed to inappropriate content, while others say that students should have the freedom to read what they want.…
