Warramunga

I'm a Warramunga lady from a small town Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. When I was young I went to a primary school that was out of Tennant Creek located at an abandon mining town called Warrego. When I turned 13 my teacher Colin Baker and Sandra Baker got me into a boarding school at Armidale NSW "New England Girls' School" (NEGS). Last year in December my daughter Zenaida and I got the chance to come and visit my friends in Hobart, Tasmania and I instantly fell in love with Hobart.

I decided to live independently with my daughter Zenaida 18 months in Hobart. I am 22years old and seeking more skills and opportunity. I am grateful for my friends for helping me to get a place on the program and to sign up for TAS Tafe.

I am very proud to be part of the Indigenous Youth Leadership Program; some day in the future I will be a proud leader helping my community to achieve great skills for their future.

PS The Warrego Primary School closed in 2007.

This also ties into the thought that Native culture of communities is an important process of learning. This brings the author to the topic of how a native community functions on different levels during the education process. One of the ways Cajete (2000) begins asserting this topic is through leadership within the community. Starting with how it was not an individual goal for that person but rather it was that person’s commitment to others and the community. This helped create unity within the community which reinforces “coming to know”.…

Earlier this year, I found myself in a situation that I once believed was a distant and seemingly unachievable goal. I was at my own Eagle Scout award ceremony and I honestly could not believe that I had finally accomplished what only six percent of all Scouts achieve. During the ceremony, I began to look back on the countless hours of work that had gone into my Eagle Project. This contemplation slowly progressed into a reflection of my entire involvement in the Boy Scouts of America and what it has taught me.…
