1 Geographic range
This species can be found nowadays from south France to Morocco. It is also distributed in the Mediterranean Sea, the Sea of Mamara and the Black Sea; furthermore, it was found in the Balearic Islands. It is native in the following countries; Albania; Algeria; Bulgaria; Croatia; Cyprus; Egypt; France; Georgia; Gibraltar; Greece; Israel; Italy; Lebanon; Libya; Malta; Monaco; Montenegro; Morocco; Portugal; Romania; Russian Federation; Slovenia; Spain; Syrian Arab Republic; Tunisia; Turkey; Ukraine.
2 Breeding[iv]
Usually this specie breeds from March to May, when there is warmer weather and longer days. The female puts the eggs under stones, or to places where they are not endangered and the male fish can guard them.
Biological description
1 Habitat
Usually, they live in crevices, holes and in steep rocks from 3 to 32 m, also we can find them between vegetation or boulders. Nevertheless, young specimens live in upper littoral between algae. The average fish density was 0.18 and 0.08 fish per 100m2 in sampling areas in the Gulf of Trieste, Northern Adriatic Sea.
2 Behavior
They are mostly active at sunrise and sunset. They are doing underwater ‘flight’ over long distances, and the rivals are attacked my mouth fight.
