or a tyrant. Although many argue that Napoleon’s reforms have been more more harmful to our nation, I’ve found that he has made many good changes to France that has improved our nation.
In addition, Napoleon is definitely viewed as a hero since he helped the peasants by establishing equality between all social classes.
I’ve recently spoken with a French citizen, Gaspard Pierre who was a peasant before Napoleon’s rule. He states that life has gotten much better for the peasants since they are considered equal as the rest. Monsieur Gaspard Pierre felt that under France’s previous leader they had an unfair life. They did not have the choice of getting higher on the social ladder unless you were rich. When Napoleon was in charge one could do any occupation which depended on talent not wealth.
Similarly, author Colette Tatou’s recent book Napoleon’s Reign takes the stance that Napoleon recreates France by creating the Napoleonic Code. In her book, Tatou insists that the basic principles in Napoleon’s code represents the ideas of the French Revolution. According to Colette Tatou once the revolution ended there were no laws to be enforced. This caused many problems in the French society. Once Napoleon become the emperor his code united France.
It is clear that without Napoleon France’s peasants would not have had a fair life and the revolution would have been a waste. Clearly, with the help of Napoleon the Napoleonic code was made. It united France by preserving the social aims of the revolution, preserving the interests of the rising middle class and it guaranteed civil
liberties.
Nevertheless, many would argue that the Napoleon Bonaparte, was tyrant who did not make any improvements to France. But they fail to consider the fact of how many crucial transformations Napoleon made during his reign which benefitted the French people. If France didn’t have have Napoleon as a ruler, then the French citizens would have been left with and ineffective laws and inequality among the social classes. As a result, we should honor the heroic Napoleon for his improvements to France when it emerged from the darkness of the French Revolution.
