A few slaves were able to buy their freedom from their owners and many became free from manumission. Manumission is when slave owners freed their slaves, however it depended on each slave owner when and how they would let go of their slave. For example, slave owners could free their slaves if they worked as many years as they wanted them to or the slaves were no longer useful to them. Although some slave owners freed their slaves on their own, others did not. This lead to many rebellions and uprisings in plantations. Continued rebellions led to the Missouri Compromise which divided states into “free” and “slaved” states. Abraham Lincoln helped African Americans gain freedom by declaring the Emancipation Proclamation. Despite the whites discouraging African American culture, the African Americans tried to maintain their identity by creating a new culture called the Creole.
