In lots of ways, the Akosombo Dam project was good for Ghana. One of the reasons is because the project brought a health service for the workers. It also brought a free transport to work and from work. The projects also helped the Ghanaians learn some life skills and activities that some wouldn’t know how to do before the project e.g. fishing, canoe building and carpeting. The dam has also brought a transport route. There is also a tomato harbor and other goods to be available. There is also a wider variety and mixture of plants.
However, in many ways, the Akosombo Dam project was not good. One of the reasons was that over 80,000 were moved and fled from their homes, their farms and their villages. At that time, Ghana was in a great deal of debt and had no money. There were also frequent droughts, which meant that the water level in Lake Volta was low and led to less electricity. Due to the environmental calamities, many Ghanaians got sicknesses and illnesses such as malaria.
I think that a good aid scheme should bring economic advantages for a country without unneeded environmental and social harm and destruction.
Overall, I don’t think that the Akosombo Dm project was a good aid scheme as it fled more than 80,000 Ghanaians from their homes and flooded 4% of Ghana. The lake has been little use for tourism and transport. The droughts have aslo lowered water level causing less electricity.
