After Forrest bumps into Jenny at the hippie event in Washington D.C., she takes him to an underground meeting of the Black Panther Party to meet her boyfriend Wesley. The Black Panther Party was an African American revolutionary leftist organization from 1966-1982. They believed in preventing racism against blacks, and believed that all blacks deserved to be treated equally to whites in society.
Wesley, the boyfriend of jenny, is the President of Berkley’s S.D.S chapter. This sounds important, but it is just a student organization consisting of self-impressed white kids who wants to be part of a “movement” so they have the feeling they do something useful, although they actually don’t. The Black Panther is member is dressed up in a military uniform and shouts the philosophies of the Black Panther Party. He shouted a lot of things but the most important were that the Black Panthers were against the ones that destroy their community; against the war in Vietnam and against any war where black soldiers were send to the frontlines to die for a country that hates them. Forrest is ignoring him, because he is focused on Jenny and Wesley that have gotten in an intense argument. In the background signs can be seen with texts like: “”Columbia is the enemy of all black people” and “No Vietnamese ever called me nigger”. The argument is heating up and Wesley suddenly knocks Jenny in the face. Forrest reacts immediately. He tackles Wesley over a table and hits him several times in the face. Forrest did not stop until Jenny interfered. Wesley then leaves with a bleeding nose. He makes a comment about how he should not have brought Jenny
