In my opinion, the League of Nations was doomed from the start. The League had failed to accomplish its main reason for even existing. It wanted to prevent another world war from ever happening again.
The League of Nations was created by President Woodrow Wilson, the president of the United States of America in 1919. The goals were to have countries co-operate with each other better, to ban all weapons (disarmament), to improve the work conditions and cure disease, and world peace.
The League was weak. This is because the most powerful, the USA, did not join. Wilson wanted to stay out of the world’s problems. The League also did not have an army to encourage and enforce the goals they wanted to accomplish. Without an army, they appeared weak to other countries.
The League took a very long time to come to a decision because everyone had to agree on the decision being made which also lead to a poor conclusion.
Appearing weak and taking years to come to a conclusion, stronger countries started invaded weaker ones as they knew that the League wouldn’t be able to stop them. The League of Nations had no real power.
As League had failures, it also did achieve some of its goals. Many prisoners of war were set free and went home, slave traders and drug dealers were arrested, they had come up with cures for diseases such as malaria and leprosy. They also settled disputes between Sweden and Finland over the Aaland and Greece and Italy over Corfu.
To suggest that the League of Nations was successful would be an over-statement. A war still broke out after 20 years when the League was created. The amount of failures outweigh the amount of tasks the succeeded at. I believe that the goals were perfect and that it could have prevented World War 2. If only they had made decisions fast enough and had a better structure of the League instead of the assembly, the council and the secretarient.
