Was The Mexican War Justified Essay
If it wasn’t for the Mexican War, the western land would be still be apart of Mexico. Mexico didn’t like the idea of the United States’s attempt to buy a large part of their country. There was also a border dispute between Mexico. Near the Rio Grande, Mexico troops had attacked the US Army. Was the Mexican War justified? The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because of Mexico’s treatment of Slidell, sixteen Americans killed by them, and attacked the US near the Rio Grande.
One reason the Mexican War was justified was the way Slidell was treated by the Mexican government. According to Was the United States Justified in Going to War with Mexico?, states, “Slidell was asked to leave Mexico City.” When Polk saw the way Slidell was treated by Mexico, he saw it as an opportunity. “He felt American’s honor had been challenged,” which was stated in the article. This evidence shows the US was justified in going to war because Mexico didn’t bother to work it out with Slidell or listen to what he had to say.
The second reason the Mexican War was justified was that sixteen Americans were killed and wounded on American soil. In Document B, it states, “[They]

But this idea was not supported by the government at all in the Mexican-American War. The Mexican-American War was an American attack on Mexico, an independent nation. If the Monroe Doctrine actually changed the way United States approached western expansion, Americans never would’ve attacked Mexico. A cartoon of Mexico portrayed as an eagle decimated by the Mexican-American war shows American intentions during the war (Doc I). Feelings of pride and power pushed American efforts to expand westward, not a “responsibility” to push impeding European powers out of North America. Americans wanted to gain land and spread democracy, and because of this desire, they attacked another independent nation with no connections to Europe. The US government was interested in gaining land already claimed by an independent nations than preventing Europe from interfering with American affairs. The American foreign policy was not defined by the Monroe Doctrine and the government blatantly ignored the ideas being promoted in the…

The Mexican-American war fought between 1846 and 1848 remains a topic of much contention amongst modern historians. Differing accounts and conclusions of the war are often presented and one must remain pragmatic when analysing both primary and secondary sources regarding the war. There is a clear time line of events that led to the outbreak of the war, but there is one major event, and one minor action, which directly resulted in the declarations of war on both sides of the conflict between Mexico and the United States. Most scholars agree that the annexation of the Republic of Texas by the United States in 1845 set the stage for hostilities, but was not necessarily the spark that ignited the violence between the two nations. There was support for the war on both sides of the conflict, which tends to blur the notion of one nation being the aggressor over the other, but this essay will highlight motivations behind the war from both sides and will argue that U.S. economic ambitions and not Manifest Destiny played the most significant role in creating the Mexican-American War.…

The United States was unjustified when going to war with Mexico for multiple reasons. One of the biggest reasons was the expansion of a slavery state. Texas is very large and great for growing cotton, so if the U.S. annexed Texas, a very large slave state would be added. The second reason was that James Polk provoked the war. He was also a big believer in Manifest Destiny. This meant that he wanted to expand the land of the U.S. , and His motto was “54 40 or fight” which meant expanding the U.S. up to the northern boundary of the Oregon territory. If this goal was not achieved, they would go to war to get it.…

The U.S had a clear and valid reason on why they needed to move into Mexico. Mexico, essentially, invited Americans to live in the province of Texas, which turned out to be a bad idea in the end. So, was the United States justified in going to war with Mexico? The answer to that question would be yes, the U.S was justified in going to war with Mexico because their population was overgrowing and they needed more land, their economic depressions made people want to live in frontier areas, and living in frontier areas would create many new opportunities for commerce and self-advancement.…

This can best be explained in the following quote, “In the eyes of the [Mexican] government, the mobilization of the US army was an outright attack on Mexico” (Document C). This clearly demonstrates that Mexico had no idea that the US army was only checking the land. After all of the troubles that have been going on between Mexico and the US, the Mexicans believed that the US was attacking them. Another piece of evidence is, “.... As a consequence, the Mexican government reaffirmed the instruction to protect the border, meaning the territory located between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River- and order which led to the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma….” (Document C). This means that the Mexican army was ordered to shoot them because they believed that it was an attack. If Mexico had known that the US was checking the land, they would not have fired on the US army and would have asked them to leave their territory. The US had no reason to go to war with Mexico because, in reality, Mexico did not do anything to the Americans. What the Mexicans did was an accident because they never knew that the Americans were coming. To the Americans it may have seen like the Mexicans were trying to actually kill their soldiers, but in the eyes of the Mexicans, they did it to protect their beloved country. They fired to protect their citizens from the selfishness of the Americans, they did it because it seemed like a threat to them. That is the reason why they did, they never did it on purpose. Although there are many variables that led to the Mexican-American war, the invasion of the US towards Mexican territory being one of them, another variable would be that the US had no respect towards Mexican…

Yes, United States was justified in going to war with Mexico. The Mexican-American War was fought mostly because of Texas's border confusion. When Texas won its independence from Mexico, they stated that the "great big river of the south" would be the border, but because of Texan's vagueness, Mexicans thought the Nueces River was the border, while the U.S. and Texas claims they were talking about the Rio Grande. The reasons America was justified in going to war with Mexico is the fact that Mexico had not exert any governmental attention to Texas, many Americans were already there, and they passed the boundary of the U.S., and killed Americans there.…

In chapter three of “Occupied America, A History of Chicanos,” Acuna explains the cause of the war between Mexico and North America. Eugene C. Barker states that the immediate cause of the war was “the overthrow of the nominal republic by Santa Anna and the substitution of centralized oligarchy” which allegedly would have centralized Mexican control (Acuna 39). Texas history is a mixture of selected fact and generalized myth. The expansion and capitalist development moved together. The two Mexican wars gave U.S. commerce, industry, mining, agriculture, and stock rising. The truth is that the Pacific Coast belonged to the commercial empire that the United States was already building in that ocean. In the Polk-Stockton Intrigue, Americans found it rather more difficult than other people to deal rationally with their wars. Many Anglo-American historians attempted to dismiss it simply as a “bad war”, which took place during the era of Manifest Destiny. Most studies on the war dwell on the causes and results of the war, and dealing with war strategy. The attitude of Mexicans toward Anglo-Americans was obviously influenced by the war and vice-versa. In the end, by late 1847 the war was almost at an end. Scott’s defeat of Santa Anna in a hard fought battle at Churubusco…

“America’s wars have often been controversial” (Roden 317). The Mexican- American War was not an exception to this rule. Many Mexicans felt that they were cheated their land. On the other hand, the US felt it was their destiny to conquer the whole North American continent and Mexico was in the way of their greatness (Roden 317). The belief in Manifest Destiny, that the USA started the conflict, and that the US had no right to Texas are all reasons that the US was not justified in taking about half of Mexico.…
