Why is a Washington State Education important to me? Washington State has been my dream college since I was a baby. It has been my families university of choice. The two most influential in my life Uncle Tony Grafton and Grandpa Donald Grafton, both alumni, raised me as a cougar. At my birth my Uncle Tony Grafton showed up at the hospital with a stuffed cougar from the WSU bookstore that sang the fight song and a baseball hat. At the time Tony was still attending WSU. As a baby I'd run around the house singing the cougar fight song instead of baby lullabies; and that WSU baseball hat rarely left my head. My parents always says, “the one investment they will give me, is the best education possible.” My parents have worked hard and paid for me to attend private catholic schooling my entire primary education. I currently attended an all-boys Catholic military college preparatory school. To be accepted to Marmion Military Academy was very competitive and to graduate from here is an honor. The student body overall is highly intelligent individuals. Students are all very competitive about getting good grades. When you factor in the fact that this is the most competitive class academically it shows a disadvantage to myself. Throughout Illinois State we have a different grading scale from around the country. For example an A here in the Chicagoland area is a ninety two for my particular school so if I were placed in a school with a less competitive grading scale I would have a higher GPA. Another disadvantage when just looking at my academic record on paper would be my class rank. Here at Marmion we learn to push ourselves in everything we do to the limit. We don’t elect easy classes for easy A’s we take core classes that we can learn concepts that will help us through life college. We don’t select easy electives for easy A’s we take core classes that we can learn concepts that will help us through life college.
