Annually, Long Beach's port ships more than $180 million in trade, which means that this city is one of the wealthiest in the state of California.(Port of Long Beach). Therefore, even though desalinization is an expensive and energy consuming process, Long Beach's economic standing makes it one of the few cities in California that is actually capable of constructing a desalinization facility. Along with its wealthier economy, Long Beach its located on the Pacific coast of California, which also makes it an ideal location for a desalinization facility because this allows for direct access to the ocean and the salinated water supply that the facility requires. In October 2005, the Long Beach Seawater and Desalination Research and Development Facility was officially commissioned. The significant pollution effort to control the amount of pollution that enters the estuary has been noticed. There are still many issues that need attention. As humans continue to effect the pollution levels within the estuary, through trash and plastic trash end up in streams and creeks and rivers that are connected to the estuary. This continues to impact the water quality, organisms within and surrounding the estuary, the agriculture pollutions and urban runoff have always been an issue and still remains one of the biggest producers of pollution in the San Francisco estuary. Human waste, personal byproducts and pharmaceuticals are a new breed of pollution that has caused concerns. The waste water plants have upgraded to manage the waste that ends up in the water ways, the operation has not been able to contain all of the pollution that comes through the waste water plant leaving traces of pollutions still entering the estuary regions. There has been much progress over the years as resulting into government parks and preservation areas being established in this program. The endangered species that are flourishing from mussels and crab species that would have been extinct, are improving population in this system. Fecal contamination, a form of pollution from microorganisms found in the gastrointestinal tract of feces, has become a growing problem within the CNMI. While the issue with fecal contamination has always been a recurring issue, especially when it pertains local drinking and potable water systems, pollution of marine waters are not to be neglected. From examining the red flag reports posted on CNMI Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality (BECQ) website, there have been 153 red flags for the island of Saipan alone between January 4th and November 17, 2017. I found this article to be very informative. I and I presume many others were not aware of the large amounts of disease causing pathogens on the beach. When I go to the beach, I always see people eating lots of food and playing in the sand, but I never see anyone using hand sanitizer or washing their hands before eating. I think that if more local studies were put out it would inform the public and they would be able to protect themselves from dangerous pathogens. In the article I saw a picture of and pipe that was releasing raw sewage directly into water at Delray Beach in Florida. Rainwater pollution is a problem that affects anyone that benefits economically, residentially, or recreationally from the Chesapeake Bay. This includes people that have businesses that rely on how many aquatic organism they capture to either sell or serve as a meal in their restaurant. Runoff is caused by rainwater that does not percolate into the soil, and it carries chemicals and waste that are then drained into the Bay through the storm drains (“Stormwater Runoff”). Background: According to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2012, 783 million people, or 11 per cent of the global population, remain without access to an improved source of drinking water. Also the United Nations has long been addressing the global crisis caused by insufficient water supply to satisfy basic human needs and growing demands on the world’s water resources to meet human, commercial and agricultural needs (un.org). In this experiment water quality and contamination of groundwater was investigated. First, I observed the effects that many pollutants have on groundwater. I predict that in this experiment the oil and vinegar will create the large amount of contamination in the water, while the laundry detergent will just create an aroma smell to it. Considering the smells and color to these ingredients I think that it will cause the water quality to have a bad smell and cause the water to be very cloudy. Once filtering the contaminated water, the water will be clear and purified. Second, I will experiment water treatment and filtering. I predict that once the contaminated water is treated and filtered that it will leave me with less contamination or none at all. Then for the last experiment, I will determine the difference between bottled water and tap water to discover any contamination. The bay is polluted, extremely polluted. Agricultural and industrial chemicals and being put in the bay. The farms use chemicals to preserve and keep their plants alive from bugs and animals, so in effect of this when it rains in mass mounts, the chemicals are broken down and included in runoff into the bay. It would be key for the bays health if scientists found a non-chemical way to preserve the crops. Over 300 million pounds of polluting Nitrogen is entered into the bay every year.
