Water Erosion Lab Report

Weathering Lab Report
Water erosion is usually caused by rainfall and runoff on a slope, and the magnitude of water erosion depends on the type of soil. This can occur on river banks, seashores, streams, or even seaside cliffs. Muddy water is also a sign of erosion. There are brown hue results from the suspension of rock and soil particles inside the water.
Water erosion usually happens in the springtime because there is usually a lot more rainfall and it still might snow which creates more water into the stream to let the stream flow.

Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to see the distance of a river

The hypothesis was If the river flows longer period of time than the distance of the river will shorten because there is more time for dirt to be removed because of water erosion. The data suggest most of what I said I think it did support the hypothesis

Conclusion:
Some of the errors that were encountered in my experiment were having the water flow through so I decided to grab water source to help the water move a little fast then it did. As you can see on the graph, the graph started to decrease except for one time where it increased and then started to decrease again. I think we could’ve done it a little different then how we did it because then the data for the experiment probably would’ve been different and we would’ve got different results then what we got the first time. I think if we had a different container then it could’ve worked a little differently than how it worked out. I think the biggest impact was dumping the water into the sand because the sand absorbed up most of the water so there was barely any water left for it to really show a river flow.

The experiment indicates some systematic errors with some of the equipment we used. For example, if we used more accurate thermometers the densities of the water and overall temperature of the water would become more accurate to the true temperature of the water, and decrease the percent error of the data. In my experiment, human error was very relevant. A systematic error also occurred in some of the readings because the water was still cooling down as the experiment went on causing the temperature to change which changed the density of the water. When calculating the density of the water I used -0.0030 g/ °Ccm3 in my calculations instead of -0.00030 g/ °Ccm3.…

My hypothesis was, if the velocity of the water is higher, thAn the water moves slower. We tested the velocity and speed in seven different locations and had a variation of results. In location one, we found that the velocity of the water was 32.04 and the water had traveled 257cm in 8.02 seconds with a depth of 37cm. In location two, the velocity of the water was 31.3 and the water traveled 263cm in 8.4 seconds with a depth of 56cm. In location three, the velocity of the water 30.35 and the water traveled 255cm in 8.4 seconds with a depth of 48cm.…

When my group went to the first station, we were testing the velocity how long it took a bobber to go down stream. To do this station, we used a piece of bamboo, string, and a bobber. We had to test the depth of the water which was 32 centimeters deep. Then we measured how long the string was and it was 285 centimeters long. After that, our group got into the water and timed how long it took to get the bobber to flow down the creek until it reached the bamboo, my…

Introduction. In this experiment the mass of zinc on galvanized iron nails was calculated to determine the appropriate price that should be charged to coat a nail with zinc (galvanize) it. The effectiveness of gasometric and gravimetric analysis were assessed by carrying out both methods mathematically using values determined by this experiment, and then comparing these values using their percent differences. The mass of zinc found on each nail can then be used to determine how much it should cost to galvanize 100 nails considering zinc cost $2.86/kg.…

The purpose of this experiment was to see if these toy dinosaurs would grow six times larger than their original size, as the package stated, if they were soaked in water for four days. My hypothesis for this experiment is that if the dinosaur is soaked in water for four days, then the dinosaur would grow six times larger than its original size in all four categories of measurement (mass, length, volume, and width).…

To measure and compare the water level of marsh and channel, the class moved along the levy and placed meter sticks into marsh (B) and opposing channel (A). We had four locations for variable: The T (1), Caution Sign (2), Meris’ Bench (3), and the Point (4). Since the meter sticks were not exactly placed to set ‘0’ as the begging of change, the ‘0’ was adjusted depend on the location. The experiment location started with 1 to 4 and came back from 4 to 1. Therefore, each location has different elapsed time. For example, site 4 (The Point) has shortest time because we put meter sticks and took off without any moving location.…

Dams can cause excess erosion on downstream of a dam due to the lack of sediments in the water. The sediments instead come from the bed and banks. Break walls can also affect the sediment levels as well as the flow of the water causing a change in the water based on the side of the break wall. An example of this could be the dam in Marquette, which upon inspection down the dam, you can see the distinguished erosion lines on the riverbanks due to the lack of natural sediment in the water.…

When moss grows on rocks it releases chemicals that slowly dissolve the rocks. Plants contribute to rock erosion when the roots grow through cracks in the rocks as the roots search for water. Soil can also become victim to plants slowly eroding it; when the plants release chemicals it breaks down the soil. Managing erosion can be an arduous process; educating others can help in the efforts of controlling erosion.…
