I was shocked to learn that Nestle was taking one of Michigan’s most precious natural resource and destroying the area by pumping ground water at an alarming rate even after it became apparent their operations were harming the surrounding property and community. According to Nestle (2014) they are “the world 's leading nutrition, health and wellness company”, but when it comes to the health and wellness of the communities they set up the bottling companies Nestle is more concerned with production than what’s best for the land, the residents or the community. The company deludes and weakens the rivers, lakes and streams that wildlife depends on to survive. Possible the worst insult Nestle delivers to Michigan is the fact that it doesn’t just strip the state of natural resources, Nestle doesn’t pay for the water or any damage done to the surrounding areas, in fact Nestle has received tax breaks in excess of 10 million dollars.
I believe the local state government has a responsibility to ensure proper management of scarce resources in the sense that they should make sure the state’s natural resources are not depleted and to keep them around so they can continue to thrive like they have done for thousands of years. The government has done a fairly good job with local parks and recreation areas and trying to make sure certain areas are protected, however more needs to be done because once these natural resources are depleted they will likely be gone forever.
It is no doubt that companies such as Nestle are of great economic value to local communities in terms of jobs, however when those people go home and to their families and their wells are drying up because of the company they work for its like they are shooting themselves in their own foot and it is the needs of the residents that are the ones who have to live with the crippling consequences once Nestle has depleted the source and moves on because the streams and rivers are dead, and the land can no
