Sociologists often follow (Merton 1972, p.20) in defining discrimination as the treatment of a functionally relevant status (such as race or sex) as relevant for the distribution of some reward or penalty. While legal standards of discrimination have changed since the passage of Title VII (Blumrosem, 1993, p. 110), legal scholars theoretically concur that discrimination involves the desperate treatment of similarly situated individuals because of their sex, race, color, national origin, religion or some other protected characteristics (Belz 1991; Blumrosen 1993, p 50). Diversity is defined as real or perceived difference among people that affect their interactions…

Prejudice, discrimination, stereotype and racism are terms used in everyday conversation. We hear and read about these daily on the news and in the media. How do we define them? Where do they come from and what do they mean? “Many people believe prejudice and discrimination as meaning the same thing, In fact, prejudice is an attitude or belief, whereas discrimination refers to behaviour or action.”Smith and Mackie (2000, p 156) According to Baron and Byrne (1991, p183) prejudice: “Is an attitude (usually negative) toward the members of some group based solely on their membership in that group” Prejudice has three components this model is known as the ABC model of attitudes. Affective components are primarily the feelings we hold about a person or group of people that we have little knowledge off. It can lead society to believe that every member of that group is the same. A typical example of this would be assuming everyone from the Far East carrying a back pack is a terrorist simply because of what happened in New York. The second component is behavioural this relates to how we behave in the presence of such groups. Finally the Cognitive component is made up of beliefs we hold about that person or group. However it is only when we act on the behaviour aspect of these components that we may actually discriminate against a person or group. “Discrimination is the behaviour or actions, usually negative, towards an individual or group of people, especially on the basis of sex, race, social class etc...” (McLeod, S. A. (2008).Prejudice and Discrimination [internet]…

Unfortunately, today in our society there is still way too much racism and discrimination against black people all over the world, and this can really affect someone’s career just based on of the colour of their skin. My article is about a group of African American gardeners who were being treated as slaves while working for a company called Khaira Enterprises in British Columbia. All the white people working for the company had easy and manageable jobs, and had good working conditions to work with, while black people were treated the complete opposite way. The black people were treated like slaves, had racial slurs against them constantly got undercooked and expired food to eat, dirty water to drink, slept in portable storage containers and worst of all, they got paid very seldom. The company was reported the company to British Columbia’s ministry of forests who eventually shut down the company, making these poor people homeless with no job.…
