In the first paragraph, the author begins the piece by using strong, uplifting words that describe Paret as being a “champion” and comments on his “ability to take a punch.” This use of diction creates an image of a true champion; a man that is respected, inside the readers mind. Those words make the reader respect Paret and create an attachment to him. In these few, short sentences the author is able to create a vivid image of Paret and allows the reader to get to know him on a personal level. This demonstrates the advancement of the author’s syntax. But, as the story progresses,…

It's about his flawed belief system. The book made us learn that the past CAN’T be changed, you CAN'T go back in time, you CAN'T alter the fundamentals of social classes simply because you want something, and you CAN'T accomplish anything if you try hard enough. Instead of touching upon this in the movie, they talk about how Gatsby was a hero. How he was amazing and perfect and was simply corrupted by society. How the only reason he died was because of cruel and unjust people. However, the truth is that Gatsby died because of, in addition to cruel and unjust people, his own arrogance. They hardly ever talk about Gatsby's arrogance, and instead paint him as a picture of innocence and perfection. Sure, he was a nice guy, but to say that he is without HEAVY flaws is disingenuous at best. Gatsby was a fool. He was a fool to the ways of society. The movie painted him as a hero that met a very untimely…

    Mcteague

Described as "young giant" who is "six feet three inches" tall, McTeague seems to have a feeling of superiority because the narrator hints that he is a ver simple man with low ambitions. Using imagery and metaphors, the narrator shows how masculine and strong McTeague is but also shows that he lack intelligence. "Immense", "muscle", "enormous", hard", and "angular" are words the author used to describe McTeague's physical attributes. Through the first half of the passage, the author was focused more on his appearance and look than his personality. This shows McTeague is a person in vain, who is judge by his looks or on how his looks reflect who he is.…

As far as his appearance is concerned, again no one could say that he was handsome but he was not ugly either. "He was in his early twenties, a thinnish, awkward young man, with a rather long neck, poor shoulders, and large clumsy hands and feet. He was obviously neither sick nor starved, yet something about his appearance, a total lack of colour and bloom ... His features were not good nor yet too bad. He had brown eyes that might have been called pretty if they had been set in a girl's face, a fairly large nose that should have been masterful but somehow was not; a small still babyish mouth, usually open, and prevailing several big and irregular teeth; and a dropping rather than retreating chin." All this made Harold Turgis rather unprepossessing to other people as well as to the reader.…
