We Die Soon Is We Real Cool Summary
Line “We die soon” is We Real Cool’s most important line because it speaks of coming to terms with reality.

This poem embodies the mindset of youth. The emotional connection I had to this poem reminded of the mindset I had leaving high school. The characters in this poem seem to be young and carefree. They take chances and make mistakes without thinking about tomorrow and the consequences.

The line “We die soon” is important because it is the most powerful. Many people fear death and as death approaches, many question the decisions they made in the life they created themselves. The line “We left school” is less significant. Put death and school on a scale. Which is “heavier?” Death would outweigh school because death is a burden that all

At first glance, the concept of death seems simple; one tries to live as long as possible, and when the time comes, he goes. However, there is much more to it than that. There is everything that leads to a person’s death and there is the aftermath. In her article “Losing Matt Shepard: Life and Politics in the Aftermath of Anti-Gay Murder,” Beth Loffreda talks about the outcome of a gay young man named Matt Shepard being murdered, and how he became lost in the wake of the movement that followed. Similarly, Jon Krakauer retraces the story of a young man named Chris McCandless who died in the Alaskan wilderness in his piece “Into the Wild.” The death of a person can become gradually more complex based on if it was natural, accidental or murder, if it was sudden, or slow, or if it was intentional. These are things that are easy to tell people, but make a big difference in the story. When writing or reading about a person’s death there are certain limits one comes across where it becomes very complicated to get the right story across. There is a great deal of limitation in writing about a person’s death because it is challenging to get all the correct details. Communicating the story of someone’s death can be complicated because many people lack the experiences to understand the events one goes through before dying and the true story often gets obscured by a shroud of drivel.…

Anne P. Beatty, who wrote Survival Skills at a School in LA, provides an inside look into a high school phenomenon in South Central Los Angeles, California. Her article illustrates a few events that take place at a high school where death and violence commonly occur. Since attending these schools, students have adjusted to the violence in such a way that they partake in routine procedures, like “the students coming around for donations” (Beatty; par. 5). when a fellow peer passed away. While a majority of adults continually struggle to cope with the occurrence of death, this story tells a tale of children who have practically become accustomed to it. Beatty provides a distinct look at this urban school setting through her inside view of student emotions, evidence of pain within the kids, and the feelings that she evokes from the audience despite her straightforward tone. Death is the inevitable end that everybody fears, if not for themselves then for their loved ones. As Jean Dubos put it best, “Death is a law, not a punishment.” Stopping death’s claim that will eventually have everyone is beyond possibility, but living life to the fullest until there is no more life to live is one. Then there are the ones left behind, however; the husbands and wives, the daughters and sons, the best friends. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men and S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, death is a topic all characters are well acquainted with by the end of each book, due to unfortunate mistakes or choices made by some, leaving the rest of the miserable characters missing their best friends. These deaths force loneliness upon many characters…

There is a moment in everyone’s life where the person realises that they don’t go on forever. Life eventually comes to an end and (until someone can put an end to it) people die. For some, it is a saddening moment where all those who hold that person dearly find that their loved one is at the end of his rope. For others, it is a saving grace to all of humanity. Nonetheless, people die, and it is the looming threat of death that encourages people to live life to the fullest. Make an impact and change the world, that is what people strive to do. Yet, up to a certain point, the human is unaware of death and how it is out for everyone. The moment where someone realises that may take years or decades to occur, but when it hits, it hits hard. In the seconds where the realisation first occurs, one can see what a person’s true character is. It is even easier to tell in the world of literature. In Joyce Carol Oates’ We Were The Mulvaneys, she depicts who Judd Mulvaney is through the use of literary techniques such as point of view and syntax.…

find Gwendolyn Brooks poem “We Real Cool” to be ironic. When you read the title, you think it’s going to be about a group of people who are cool, but once you go through each line, you realized it’s the opposite. The poem’s about “seven players” who drop out of school to live a carefree lifestyle, drinking alcohol and playing pool. The “players” have a nonchalant attitude towards life which is made pretty clear throughout the poem. The constant use of “We” makes me believe it’s a way of claiming their arrival and when she says “We Jazz June,” I think she is likening their behavior as to a summer mentality where it’s all about good times and no school. The end of the poem shows how their path leads them to an early death.…

The poem literally paints us a vivid picture of a group of kids who think they’re cool by acting rebellious. “Death is more universal than life; everyone dies, but not everyone lives,” quoted by Alan Sachs. Death is a part of everyone and touches everyone’s lives a little differently. It is a topic is that is usually followed by forms of sadness from the people associated with the person who passes away. What death is considered would be the end of someone’s life; they stop breathing and their body stops working. Death can come unexpectedly, it can be anticipated, but it is never easy. Due to many adults having a difficult time accepting death, they feel that the topic of death is too hard for children to understand; they believe the children should be kept uninformed. In Literature for Children A Short Introduction, Author David Russell explains…

I selected this aphorism because it demonstrates how the general perception of death is that it will never arrive, or that it is set to occur much later than the present, as this conflicts with one’s self-preservation instinct. The photograph of the fish jumping away from its community of fish to another bowl elucidates the concept of living life to the fullest and venturing out of familiar territory, leading me to select this image as it captures Morrie’s lesson of considering each day as our last and therefore attempting to live them to the fullest. The photograph of the youth standing on the pinnacle of a rock poignantly illustrates that in our everyday lives we should try reach our peak happiness and personal emotional achievement, as any day could be the day that we perish. As much as we may reject it, our demise could come at any moment and in preparation for this event we should consider every one of our days as it were our last. As a society we should try, to the best of our ability, to perceive our days as invaluable and…

In Gwendolyn Brooks “We Real Cool” we are given a four stanza couplet that shows the daily activities of seven young men that dropped out of school. What I found really fitting in this poem was how the rhythm of the poem related well to the lifestyle of these young men. Each line comes at the reader quickly. Much like the rapid fire delivery of the lines in the poem, these characters also live life quickly both literally and metaphorical. The poem is spontaneous as are the characters and each line reveals more and more of the counterculture lives that these men live.…
