EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Fred Westen, CEO of Hathaway Jones, planned to expand business to China. His friend’s daughter Mimi who had grown up in China liked to be a part of this move. He conducted an interview and found that she has enough capability to lead a flagship store in China. But, vice president of HR department in his firm found a news saying that Mimi had led a nonviolent protest group that protest against China. This made rethink about hiring Mimi for the China project.
He should decide future course of action in the issue of hiring Mimi and successfully implementing the project of Hathaway Jones in China. Different alternative solution for this situation is evaluated on the basis of five criteria. I recommended that Fred must hire Mimi and post her in different place other than China and find a new person with suitable qualities for leading the flagship store in Nanjing road, China. An effective action plan that
Fred should be taken for implementing this solution is given in the last.

On May 15th, Monica reminded Carl of the training schedule, orientation, manuals, policy booklets, drug tests, and all of the other issues he was to have coordinated by the June 15th deadline. During his contact with Ms. Carrolls, he assured her that the specified issues would be in order on time. Unfortunately Mr. Robins did not follow through in concluding the hiring process correctly. While Mr. Robins was able to successfully recruit several new hires, he lacked in following hiring procedures correctly. In retrospect, consideration should have been made on Mr. Robins’ behalf to look into what may have caused his lapse in judgment. Did the manual given to Mr. Robins at the time of his hire, clearly specify the protocols put in place by ABC, Inc. on new hire procedures. Perhaps his supervisor needed to check in with him periodically to ensure he had a good grasp of the hiring process. It is unclear as to whether or not Mr. Robins was supposed to be in charge of the screening process; however, this could have also been allocated to HR to follow up with as well. There are a lot of underlying issues with the hiring process at ABC, Inc., but it is evident that Mr. Robins will need to take accountability for his lack of…

In the case study “We Googled You”, the hiring manager must take a pragmatic approach to the situation. The reality is that it is not difficult to uncover online information that could call a candidate into question. Fred needs to sit down with the HR professional, gaining agreement to bring Mimi back into the office to discuss the situation. This is a solid first step to understanding Mimi’s current position, and will give Fred the benefit of seeing how Mimi handles a difficult situation. If Mimi’s position hasn’t changed, then Fred must consider this in assessing her viability as a candidate for the position. If her views have changed and Fred feels she is a finalist candidate for the position, Mimi will have the opportunity to update her position in online forums, to avoid negative press that may arise if she is named to the position. There are very likely many other well-qualified candidates for the position; Fred needs to consider them as well – even if only as a point of reference for assessing Mimi’s candidacy. Fred needs to tap HR for support in vetting those candidates and bringing them in for interviews. If Hathaway Jones wants to meet with success in their flagship store in China, Fred needs to offer the position to most qualified candidate, instead of ‘settling’ for the candidate with the best connections.…

The profit performance of this store is below average for its location and Bill is looking forward to the challenge of improving profits. When he was an assistant manager, he was given mostly minor administrative duties and paperwork, so this assignment will be his first opportunity to show he can be an effective manager. The base salaries of the 20 employees who work in Bill's store are set by the company, but appraisal ratings by the store manager influence the size of an employee's annual merit raise. These recommendations must be justified to the regional manager, especially if they are not consistent with individual and department sales. Bill can suspend or fire employees with the approval of his boss, but in practice it is difficult to do so unless the recommendation is supported by a strong case.…

The case in the “We Googled You” article is rather tricky. On one hand, the disconcerting online revelation with Mimi protesting against China serves as solid evidence not to hire her. If members of the management team based in China discover the pictures and information about Mimi’s protests, they may decline to continue to conduct business with Hathaway Jones. It will also ruin the company’s reputation in the eyes of potential future customers. In addition to the searched Google results, Mimi’s recommendations also contained a few negative traits including brash and strongly opinionated. These aspects may not allow her to get along with other workers and colleagues. Her liberal behavior including her wink at Fred is not quite suitable for China’s more conservative culture.…

From my perspective, Fred Western should talk to Mimi to explain her protest activities, and hire Mimi if the potential risk related the online history can be preventable. He should clarify her point of view about her past protest involvements and how those views have changed rather than making a judgment only from digital information. Online information can be easily falsified so it is important to clarify the situation. If her opinions toward China have changed in positive ways, potential risk can be removed by posting her current point of view on the online. Executives who take responsibility to hire employees should pay more attention to…

Fred Westen was interested in hiring his old roommate John Brewster’s daughter Mimi for Hathaway Jones’s expansion into China. After the first interview, Fred forwarded Mimi’s profile to Virginia. The background verification on Google search revealed Mimi’s involvement in protests that included China’s treatment against a journalist in California. Based on these findings, Fred is unable to decide whether to hire Mimi for China operations. Considering various evaluation criteria and options, I suggest Fred should hire Mimi for the expansion plan in China but as a strategist working from the U.S office.…
