We Were Lias
A literary element I liked about We Were Liars was theme. The theme of “We Were Liars” is the importance of family. In the story the Sinclairs aren’t a family, Cadence’s mother and aunts pressured the Liars into acting a certain way that grandfather wanted. So the mother and aunts could get Clairmount and the riches.”Welcome to the beautiful Sinclair family. No one is a criminal. No one is an addict. No one is a failure”(2)This is all a lie, the Liars are criminals, Cadence takes these addicting meds, and Cadence’s mother got a divorce, Johnny's mother got a divorce too.“Dad announced he was leaving and departed two days later. He told my mother he wasn’t a Sinclair, and couldn’t try to be one, any longer. He couldn’t smile, couldn’t lie, couldn’t be part of that beautiful family in those beautiful houses.”(2) Cadence’s father couldn’t be like a Sinclair so he left, he couldn’t stand to lie or smile when he was down. The grandfather Harris, is the king of the island, since the three daughters, Cadence’s mother and aunts want to inherit the most money when Harris is gone they will do anything for him.

This book has a very good theme but was not written to entertain the mind of a high school teen. The theme of friendship and the theme of telling the truth instead of hiding from it can help you overcome problems with your friend helped me out in life personally. I saw how what someone can see as white lie can produce even worse problems than the problems that would occur for telling the truth. I have been in situations where I could easily get out of a dilemma by lying but it was exceptionally wrong to do so. I thought this story was boring because besides Finny’s death, Finny falling out of the tree, and the “trials” on Gene there wasn’t much action. The writing of Knowles taught me to always do what is right no matter the consequence for it, because there may be greater consequences for not telling the truth.…

The first theme for Nothing But The Truth is manipulation of the facts because almost throughout the book Philip never told people the exact truth. He claims that he was just singing along to the national anthem quietly, but in reality he was just loudly humming the song on purpose so he can get kicked out of her class. Sadly, almost everyone fell for it. They believed that Philip was innocent and Miss. Narwin was the bad guy. Unfortunately for Miss. Narwin, nobody is there to explain what actually happened in the classroom. Because of that, she decides to resign from teaching and move to Florida to live with her sister.…

For example, the story had some negative effects of prejudice because the grandmother was being prejudiced. 2. George Johnston uses the theme of deception all through the novel, through the character of David Meredith. David was the most deceitful character in the novel. He did not care who he hurt on the way to getting away from his plain and mediocre life. David basically hurt everyone in his life that ever cared about him. George Johnston used the theme of deception when David continuously deceived his parents. He lied to his parents about the paintings being his own when they were only a lithograph of Tom Middleton’s…

First, the theme is shown in the exposition by establishing how close the Curtis family is. The first example is when Armani’s neighbors the Babineaux’s told Armani they should leave but she doesn’t tell Daddy because it was her birthday weekend but Georgie hears about it and instead of ruining Armani’s birthday, he helps Armani and doesn’t tell Daddy. The author writes, “‘Yeah,’ Georgie said over the top of his glasses. ‘You don’t wanna show up at your party on Sunday looking like you dressed yourself outta the swamp.’ He laughed. Daddy shook his head from side to side, a nice smile shining across…

Symbolism is one of the most common and powerful literary devices. It helps revel the characters and develop the themes of the work. Ian Macmillan has successfully made use of symbolism in the short story "Liar Liar". The heron and the camera are the most vital symbols of all, which help provide a deeper meaning of the story. While the heron represents for the wealthy families, the camera embodies new hope, new outlook, and these two symbols both convey the message about the role of family in the life.…

The setting of We Were Liars takes place on the Sinclair’s summertime private island, owned by the main characters’ grandparents, off the coast of Massachusetts. The private island has many unique features that also contribute to the overall plot of the novel. One quality of the island is that it has multiple different homes on it, designated to each of Tipper Sinclair, also known as Granddad,’s children. The children take turns trying to out-flatter their dad in hopes of being rewarded with the largest house with the best view of the island. Because there is one house that all of the mothers desire, it is a common subject of argument between Granddad’s daughters. The setting contributes to the central conflict, because most of the novel is…
