In the Frankish kingdom, kings used their army to expand. A good example would be the Frankish king Charlemagne during his attempt to revive the Ancient Roman culture. Charlemagne was not the only Frankish king to do work with the military. The grandfather of Charlemagne who was called Charles ‘The Hammer’ Martel. He stopped the Islamic Empire from expanding into Western Europe (Amaral). The Pope Urban II gets involved because he called upon the first crusade. Using that crusade, the Pope was able to capture Jerusalem (Elgin). Also, there is a famous war that happened during that time period known as the Hundred Year War. This war took place between France and England. The cause for this war was because “Edward III, king of England, asserted that he in fact had a superior claimed to the throne because his mother was Philip the Fair's daughter” (Hundred Years War) Within that war there were many battles.
