Weatherspoon Art Analysis
When I first arrived at the Weatherspoon Art Museum on UNCG’s campus, I was in awe of the beautifully complex works displayed within it. There was a plethora of paintings, drawings, and sculptures, which not only captivated but enticed me with their unique beauty and grace. This made it quite difficult to pick just one work of art. However, as I passed through each exhibit and entered into Weatherspoon’s outside sculpture garden, I noticed one bronze sculpture in particular which held my attention and left a significant impression on me. This sculpture was Lunalilo by Deborah Butterfield.
Deborah Butterfield is an American sculptor born in San Diego, CA, on May 7th, 1949 (artnet). This talented sculptor began her career in the 1970’s by sculpting

    As you enter the Great Stair Hall, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, you are met with a view of a statue that stands fourteen feet tall. Made of gilded copper, this large statue is Diana by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It depicts the nude goddess Diana; balanced on one foot atop of a gold ball, with poise and grace drawing back her bow and arrow in preparation for release. Due to its size, color, and placement this piece is the focal point in the room. Directly across from the statue suspended above the open space and staircase below is Alexander Calder’s Ghost. This sculpture is not well lit and the area on the second floor in which is hangs is an almost empty space that doesn’t have other gallery entrances near it and almost feels closed off. Hung from the ceiling, Ghost is a thirty-four foot tall mobile comprised of numerous metal rods and painted sheets of metal.     The second work I chose to write about is The Genius of the Dance (Le genie de la danse) by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. I knew nothing about the subject matter of this work before visiting the museum, but I was very attracted to the beauty of it. The Genius is designed to be taken apart in certain places that are held together by pins. The separate parts were molded and cast, then joined by hand, and the seams were then covered by extra metal. The drapery gives the effect of movement, or dancing. The Genius of the Dance is a reduced version of The Dance with the same central figure. Also, Carpeaux got a lot of hate for the female nudity in The Dance, so he excluded them in The Genius of the Dance. I don’t think the texture or size of the sculpture adds to the impact of the work, because it wasn’t that big, and bronze was used quite a lot. I believe it’s the subject that attracts the viewers to this sculpture.…

    When taking a trip to the Norton Museum of Art I chose a one dimensioned painting called Adam that was located on the first floor. The artist is Nicholas Carone and was painted in 1956. To the left of the painting, Adam, was another painting named Personage which was painted by Robert Mothewell in 1943. Personage is an abstract oil painting on canvas with multiple different colors. To the right of Adam was a sculpture called Sea Quarry and was created by Theodore Roszak. The sculpture was not an obvious choice that it was a sea animal at first. I had to stand there for a minute and really look at the sculpture to being to see what it was really intended for the sculpture to be. Returning to my original choice, Adam by Nicholas Carone, it is also an oil painting done on canvas. Carone first started with a plane black picture and continued to manipulate it with white paint color and other lines using different thick and thin brushes. The picture was made to represent and recreate light and shadow but is opaque. It uses several different elements of art including color, value, line, shape, and space. “Adam”s composition is curved lines and is known as an Abstract Expressionism type of art.…

    The “Storm King Art Center” is an open air museum. The 500 acred park is filled with fields, hills landscapes, and sculptures, making it not only a park, but a museum. Just by looking at pictures and videos of the place I feel enhanced by the beauty of it. I don't know much about art, but i can still see the beauty of everything in the park, you dont have to be an expert to realize how amazing the work is. Although it is an hour away from the city, they say its like being in a whole 'nother country, and a perfect escape from the hustle of NYC.     Linda Nochlin’s essay Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists, pays critical attention to the way in which we look at art through a gender lens. The question is not whether women are capable of producing great art but rather why have they been kept in the shadows. Nochlins essay is a founding document of feminist art history that explores powerful relationship between gender and art and the history of dynamic tension. Edmonia Lewis is not only an example of a prolific female artist, but is a sculpture of African American and Native American decent. In Lewis’s sculptures we see stylistically neoclassic imagery with an important twist, she puts her own identity at the periphery. Lewis work encompasses themes of religion, freedom and slavery and while she sometimes depicts African, African American and Native American people in her sculptures, she more often neutralized her subjects race or ethnicity which made her art more acceptable to the social norms during the 19th century. In order to achieve professional fulfillment, women during this time had to deny their femininity but for Edmonia Lewis this extended even further into denying her culture, race and identity. Had Lewis not been a woman, had she not have been born from a Chippewa Indian mother nor an African father, would she have been celebrated more for her artistic genius?…

    At the El Paso Museum of Art I saw many beautiful and wonderful paintings and sculptures but the “The Portrait” was the sculpture that caught my attention the most. “The Portrait” was sculpted by Frances Bagley an American artist born on April 7, 1946 in Fayetteville, Tennessee. Frances Bagley lives and works in Dallas, Texas. “The Portrait” was created in 1997 and it is made out of stainless steel and marble. I believe that “The Portrait” is an interesting piece of art because it resembles exactly what the title says. It is a portrait of a the artist or a portrait of woman. The sculpture has shape and contour which is the shape of a woman like in a night gown. The sculpture has mass. It also has texture because in the stainless steel you can see that is shine and smooth and the marble is not finish so you can see that is rough. It has color because even if the marble is rough it has different colors. It has proportion and scale in the part of the body from top to bottom as well it does have the proper scale to simulate a woman sitting down. “The Portrait” has design, unity, and aesthetic because the whole piece is appealing to eye since it resembles the shape of a woman with the different pieces of rough marble place inside of the stainless structure and even if the materials does not have a glamorous touch the sculpture does captivate the viewers attention because of its has beauty. But most important the portrait has content and iconography because the piece is portraying a woman that is always beautiful even in her simplest form and it also resembles the meaning that a woman has in society as a strong person because it gives life to their children and as the foundation of the family.
