Internet access can be neglectful to people and to their loved ones. Internet addictions may cause the person to be more obsessed with the computer, to avoid family time, and to be stuck in a fantasy world.
Many people to spend more and more time at the computer, which can be addictive. According to Payne’s article, “On such boards [Internet Addicts Anonymous, Gaming Addiction and Internet Addicts Recovery Club], posters admit that they feel as though they can’t step away from the computers without feeling drawn back and that their online habits interfere with personal relationships, daily routines and their ability to concentrate on work or school. For example, my friend Frankie is obsessed with his computer. From the moment he wakes up the first thing he approaches is his computer. He would skip meals, just so he could sit in front of the monitor. Some days he would rush home from work or school so, that he could turn on his computer right away.
Another problem with Internet use is when family and friends are being neglected. My cousin Stephanie, a mother with two children. She spends six to seven hours a day on the Internet. While her husband is at work, there are days that Stephanie does not complete simple house chores and would briefly take care of the kids. When her husband returns home after work, the house is a ship wreck, unfolded laundry mixed with clean clothes thrown on the floor, dirty dishes in the sink, kids running around destroying the house, and his wife glued in front of the monitor. This was no mother, wife, and or a normal human being in my eyes. In addition, Melvin a friend of mine, seems to devotes his time on the Internet, rather than spend quality time with his family. Melvin comes home every day after work and heads straight towards the computer to browse the Web. He doesn’t acknowledge his family nor does he sit at the dinner table to eat.
