TuneCore.com – WHAT IS IT? Tunecore.com is the new player on the block when it comes to online music publishing and on demand digital music distribution. TuneCore.com was founded in 2005 in Brooklyn by
Jeff Price, Peter Wells, and Gary Burke. But only recently has the buzz really been going around.
“Have you seen tunecore.com yet?” Someone asked me one day a few months back. Well, that’s how I ran into it, by word of mouth.
WHAT DO THEY DO?
TuneCore.com offers musicians and other rights-holders the opportunity to place their music into online retailers such as iTunes, AmazonMP3, Zune Marketplace, Rhapsody, eMusic, and others for sale. So, the artist(s) can sell their own music without the headache of a record label’s red tape.
HOW DID THEY DO IT?
Well, Jeff Price the president, CEO and chairman of the board, and a co-founder, along with co-founders Peter Wells and Gary Burke. In December 2006, Guitar Center a music instrument and equipment retailer bought a stake in TuneCore, giving the company access to the music retailer's customers. One of their very first customers and mainstream artist to sell tracks off of their online platform in collaboration with affiliate music publishing companies was
Frank Black, lead singer of the Pixies. More recently, TuneCore achieved passing media attention when the company was tapped by Nine Inch Nails to deliver the music from their album GHOST I-IV, to the Amazon MP3 store for worldwide digital distribution. In the United
States, TuneCore Distribution represents about 10 percent of the 20 million songs on iTunes, and it accounts for almost 4 percent of all digital sales as of the time I’m writing this report.
