Questions for Review – Week #2

1) What kinds of establishments may employ full-time students at 85 percent of the minimum wage? Retail and Service establishments and farms may employ full-time students at 85% of the minimum wage. 2) What are the types of exempt white –collar employees? Executives, administrators, professional employees, highly compensated employees, computer professionals, and outside salespersons can be exempt if they satisfy certain tests. 3) Under what conditions is travel time counted as time worked? If an employee who regularly works are a specific location is given a special work assignment in another city then travel time is counted as time worked.

Questions for Discussion – Week #2 1) Abreu Company allows employees the option of carrying over unused vacation days or “cashing” them out. If they cash out, does the employer count the time or earnings when calculating overtime for these non-exempt employees? Overtime pay is calculated based on anything worked over 40 hours, therefore they would need to count the time when calculating overtime. 2) Lidle Company needs time to calculate employees’ overtime payments by the end of the pay period in which the overtime is worked. Can it pay the overtime payments with the following period’s paycheck? No, payment for overtime worked must be made on the regular payday for the time period in which the overtime work took place. Each workweek is a separate unit for the purpose of computing overtime pay.
