Departmentalization describes a very formal way of structuring an organization and provides the organization a number of ways to address the unique demands which they are facing. Departmentalization can be structured through placing the focus on programs, functions, processes, markets, the consumers and/or clients, and geographical areas. An advantage of departmentalization includes the ability to place the focus on the specifics of the organization, which allows for very precise results. However, the disadvantage of departmentalization in this case, is that it is only an ideal structure for those organizations which employ a very small number of employees.
Matrix organizations are structures that allow for more than one supervisor and greatly support teamwork among those within the organization. Matrix organizational structures are ideal for larger organizations, which is a great advantage given our significant increase in both staff and business. Following a matrix structure would allow the organization to double in size without losing the significance of the goals set forth.
