Evaluate the claim of the authors Article “Matching the project manager’s leadership style to project type” that the project manager’s leadership style influences project success. Identify and briefly evaluate one of the leadership traits possessed by some project managers that the authors state as unimportant and possibly detrimental to the success of a project.
The Article (Muller, 2007) tries to test two important hypotheses through an integrated model of intellectual, emotional and managerial competence to identify project managers’ leadership styles. These hypotheses are:
Hypothesis 1: The project manager’s competency, which includes his or her leadership style, is positively correlated to project success.
Hypothesis 2: Different combinations of project leader- ship competency are correlated with success on different types of project.
Analysing the information from the application of the model in Project Managers through a set of surveys and interviews, the authors try to probe the correlation between the intelligent competence, emotional competence and managerial competence and the project success criteria. The results found in the surveys show high relation with the the strategic prepared questions answered by the project managers in the interviews. This results are well supported by the authors, and shown that for projects in Engineering and Construction, Information systems and Organization & Business (so it can be generalize to all projects) that Emotional competence have the most significant contribution to the project success than intellectual and managerial contribution.
In particular, the author found that all high performing projects Conscientiousness, sensitivity and communication are correlated to project success, but strategic perspective is negatively correlated to project success.
