Week 8 Governance Survey 2014
Mgt 710 Process Innovation and Management
Homework Exercise

The objective of this homework is to understand how business processes are managed in organizations.

A. Students who are working in an organization

Please have the attached survey completed by a business manager who is senior enough to have a perspective on the processes in a major part of the organization. You should be able to complete the questions in Section A of the survey yourself. The remaining questions in the survey should be completed by the business manager. The manager can be asked to complete the survey and return it to you or, preferably, you could arrange a short 20-minute interview with the manager and complete the questions during the interview.

In addition to returning the questionnaire, please provide approximately one page of comments on what you have learnt about Business Process Governance in your organization (or in general if you are not currently working.) If you have any suggestions for improving the questionnaire, please let me know.

Note: The primary interest here is in business processes – not the processes that are internal to the IT department such as help desk or hardware and software procurement processes.

B. Students who are NOT working in an organization and do not have access to a senior manager who would be knowledgeable about process governance.

Write a 4-page essay on process governance by carrying out the following steps:

a. Access Yahoo HotJobs, make five different queries by entering the following search terms: “Business Process Manager”, “Business Process Analyst” and “Business Process Owner” “Business Analyst” and “Project Manager”. Tabulate and comment on the results. What have you found out about the qualities that companies are looking for in the process management area? What have you found out about the relative demand for each of these job catefories?

b. Describe an experiment that could be conducted to further analyze this data.

Finally, there are four types of governance models the board can adhere to including; the traditional model, the corporate model, the policy governance model, and lastly the dynamic or high impact model.…

This, in return, increase efficiency and productivity, at the same time allow organisation to minimize its bureaucracy and foster flexibility. Other types of teams, such as problem-solving team, virtual team, management team and self directed team (SDT), are formed within a company. SDTs have increasingly emerged as a popular strategy in the execution of tasks. As discussed by Appelbaum, Abdallah and Shapiro (1999, p.60), ‘lately self directed teams are being used as ways of achieving employee participation as well as getting closer to the customer.’ This can be seen in various companies including ‘Motorola, Xerox, Proctor & Gamble, AT&T, Federal Express, Levi Strauss, and General Electric (Tata, 2000, p.187).’…
