Unlike the majority of 7th graders living in New Jersey, Dawn Wiener does not have an ordinary life with love from her family and friends. If you find her in a crowd of people, she will stands out right away. In the movie Welcome to the Dollhouse, director Solondz has displayed the unusual life of Dawn Wiener who comes from a dysfunctional family of five; her parents, a geeky arrogant elder brother and a spoiled younger sister who gets all the attention from her mother. Being the middle child in the family, Dawn stands out as a black sheep who not only has to deal with being ostracized and friendless in school, but also is treated with disdain and being ignored at home as well. All of this brings forth some unforgettable traits in Dawn. She is naive, psychotically angry and socially awkward.

She is being bullied in school but doesn’t how to deal with it or fight back, she mimics from other bullies or people who is more confident and she is socially rejected from every parts of her life. Not only does Dawn have no friends in school, she also gets bullied all the time. Kids call her “ugly” or “lesbian”, she doesn’t have a place for eating lunch and she can’t even go to washroom without being bullied. She tries being nice, asking politely or avoid, but none of that works and she keeps being bullied all the time. So she starts to mimic from people who seems to her are those “cook kids.” When she heard Steve called her brother “shit face,” she said exactly the same thing to Mark, and when she heard Brandon called Ralphy “faggot,” she starts to call Ralphy “faggot” as well. By doing this, she feels more powerful and less miserable compares to others. But no matter what she does, she is still being rejected from every parts of her life, when she sees a little kid was bullied, she tries step up and do the right thing but even the little kid tells her to stay away from
