Communication 241 – Informative Speech Instructions For this first major speech, students are expected to combine various elements of basic speech construction and organization into a presentation of an informative nature. While topic selection is generally left to the students, the components of this speech require attention to the following different parts: 1. An introduction should encompass an effort to gain the audience’s attention, provide a thesis statement, purpose statement and preview what the speaker intends to cover during the presentation. 2. Use of language and transitions should be implemented in the presentation. 3. An identifiable speech organizational pattern should be used consistently. 4. An audio, visual, or combination aid is required to enhance the presentation. Do not read from a powerpoint presentation. 5. Only notecards or paper cut to that size will be permitted. Proper use of oral citations is expected. 6. A basic conclusion must be constructed which applies elements from the book and lectures. 7. Credible research must be used and attributed properly within the speech. 8. An identifiable conclusion pattern should be used during the speech.
Speech Time: 6-8 minutes. A small number of questions will be allowed following each presentation.

Library handouts and/or websites may be sufficient. ‣ 4x6 index cards ADA COMPLIANCE STATEMENT: Any student requesting academic accommodation based on a disability is required to register with Disability Services and Programs (DSP) each semester.
