Introduction
One of the first things success coach trainees learns is how to teach clients to create well-formed outcomes. The process of creating well-formed outcomes is a form of goal setting, but a bit more in depth. Helping clients create the right state of mind to accomplish these outcomes is just as important as the outcomes themselves. At its core, this process is about having clients realize that in most cases all that is needed is a behavior change to achieve their goals and they have all the resources they need within them. “What are the negative consequences of the new behavior?” ii. “What would be the problem with having the new outcome?” (Start identifying the benefits to the new behavior, it will help segue to the next step.)
• Benefits of the new behavior
i. “What are some of the positives of making a change to the new behavior?” ii. “What will the new behavior do for you?”
• It is important, at this point, to have the client agree that making a change is still the right course of action. These simple agreements can have a profound psychological effect on a client. It forces them to commit to a course of action, which we know is a powerful principle of persuasion.
7. At this point the client may start exhibiting resistance to change through excuses and a desire for the status quo. This step is designed to root out those motivational blocks and reframe them in such a way that minimizes their hold on the client and allows them move on with the process. Utilize some of the following questions to bring the resistances to the surface.
• “Up to now, what has prevented you from having (outcome)?”
• “What has prevented you from making these behavior changes?”
• “Why do you want to make this change” (Reaffirms their motivation for making the
