In the story “The Werewolf” the protagonist is a little girl who lives in a scary and dark town. One day she decides to visit her grandma, on her way she encounters a werewolf, who attacks her. Once she cut the werewolf's hand defending herself later one she realizes that the pay no longer belonged to the werewolf, but to someone closer to her. A theme that the reader can observe in this short story is betrayal. The theme can be seen at the beginning of the story when the author is describing the setting of the story, “Cold; tempest; wild beasts in the forest. it is a hard life …”(Carter 1) with this quote the reader can infer that the wilderness is the house of beast and danger, this quote also can help the reader infer that the author might mention the forest on a future reference. …show more content…
Towards the ending, the author shows the reader the theme when she states "But it was no longer wolf's paw. I was a hand, chopped off at the wrist, a hand toughened with work and freckled with old age. There was a wedding ring on the third finger and a wart in the index finger. By the wart, she knew it for her grandmother's hand”(Carter 1) this quote explains to the reader how betrayal is portrayed in the story. When her grandmother turns out to be the werewolf that attacked her she feels betrayed and shows no sign of remorse
