Character Analogies
| Maria = Juliet |A-Rab = Sampson |Sharks = Capulets |
|Tony = Romeo |Riff = Tybalt |Jets = Montagues |
|Anita = Nurse |Bernardo = Mercutio |Det. Shrank = Escalus |
|Baby John = Gregor |Doc = Friar Laurence |Chino = Paris |

The characters do have some differences, since they are created in another place and time. For example, Doc is more helpless than Friar Laurence; Det. Shrank shows the dark side (not the wiser side) of the law; the religious side of Maria and Juliet comes from a different motivation. There are also other possibilities for comparison--are the characters Anybodys and Action similar to Shakespeare's clowns in the way they comment on society? Are Rosalia, Velma and the other women Romeo's Rosalind--stereotypes of women by naive men?
In the NTID production of West Side Story, we have done some casting against "type", in order to explore the play with new eyes. For example, our Rosalia is brighter and sharper than the 1958 Rosalia, and Shrank is a hard-bitten woman detective. Plot and Structure Comparisons

What would Romeo and Juliet be like if Juliet hadn't died? What if Paris killed Romeo, instead of vice versa? What if instead of occurring several centuries ago, it took place on the streets of New York City during the 1950s, with a bunch of fresh-faced youths posing as street toughs and dancing and singing their hearts out? Well, just take a look at West Side Story, and you will have your answers. It is impossible for anyone familiar with both texts to not note the obvious major similarities between the two plays. From the opening scenes in both, up through the rumble in West Side Story/death of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, the plays mirror each other (Poelstra). It isn't until the last part of West Side Story, where Tony, our modern-day Romeo, dies and Maria, Tony's Juliet, doesn't (unlike the two star-crossed lovers of Shakespeare's work), that the major difference between the two works becomes apparent.…

Romeo and Juliet is hailed as a staple of romantic literature, with beautiful prose and loving relationships. However, while its language is eloquent, Romeo and Juliet’s relation is the antithesis of a good relationship. Any relationship which involves both parties ending up dead within a few days of meeting each other is probably not healthy. It’s clear both of them rushed into it based on superficial reasons and stupidity ended it early.…

“With love’s light wings I did o’erperch these walls.” In this response, Romeo enlightens his most beloved, Juliet, that the power of love can produce the ability to overcome immensely infallible hindrances and angst. Notably, he validated his response by climbing over an altitudinous wall of the Capulet family to converse with Juliet. With Romeo being a member of the Montague household, he would be killed if found on the property. In doing so, he proved his proclamations of devotion and commitment to their relationship.…

Romeo is the son and heir of Montague and Lady Montague but is also best friends with Mercutio and his cousin Benvolio. Romeo has a stronger bond to Friar Lawrence than he does with his parent and this makes the Friar the father figure of Romeo just like how the nurse is for Juliet. Verona respected and loved him; in addition, he was also a handsome man who falls easily in and out of love. During the play, Romeo’s character evolves from adolescence to adulthood as a result of his love for Juliet and his inherited involvement in the feud between the Capulets and Montagues.…

The characterization of the protagonists and antagonists have many differences. The Montagues and Capulets are from the same society and lifestyle in the play. They don't have a reason for their long feud that's stretched back for generations. The Sharks and Jets, however, are segregated by racial and ethnic tensions. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet's parents are the sole obstacles blocking her from Romeo, because they want her to marry someone suitable. Yet parents are never seen in Maria's life, while, her brother and his girlfriend are the ones that act as parents. Juliet's suitor, Paris, is neutral and is on neither side of the feud. Maria's suitor, Chino, is completely on the Sharks' side and ends up killing Tony, one of the main protagonists. As for the main characters, Maria and Tony are somewhat different from Juliet and Romeo. Maria is more carefree and idealistic than Juliet. This is shown through her hopes of her life in America and with Tony. Juliet, on the other hand, follows the orders of her parents until Romeo comes along and shows her true love. Although Juliet seems more serious and mature at the beginning, Maria grows up during the course of the movie. Tony and Romeo are just the opposite. Tony knows whom he loves, and that's Maria, while Romeo had a very idealistic view of love in the beginning of the play, maturing as the end neared and he had to deal with Juliet's death. Tony and Maria are…

The mood created in this parallel plot between Romeo and the Capulet servant is suspenseful based on Shakespeare’s use of tone for the characters and foreshadowing. This shall connect to the major plot by the fact from the prologue, which is, “Two star cross’d lovers”, Romeo could meet his star cross’d lover. As we get to the end of the conversation between Romeo and the servant, the servant implies, “if you not be of the house of Montagues, I pray, come and crush a cup of wine/Rest you merry!”. To paraphrase, the servant tells him that if he is not a Montague, he should come to the feast to drink a cup of wine. This implies that the servant invites Romeo to the feast(with no idea that he is a Montague and that he spoke to the ENEMY!). This…

The play “Romeo and Juliet” written by William Shakespeare is full of gang affiliation, representation, violence, and feuding. The whole play is based on two families, the Montagues and Capulets, the feuding sides are far too much alike to some real feuding gangs and feuding families. First, gang affiliation, everyone is on a side in this play, for example, the character Mercutio is not blood related to either family, but he is considered a Montague because he has sided with them, and has made it clear that he is against the Capulets.…
