BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Egg, as we all know, is one of the most common food ingredients. It is used mostly in cakes, leche flans, and omelettes. It is also used in many other recipes like mamis, palaboks, aroz valenciana, among others. The parts of the egg that we consider useful are only the yolk and the white. These are the parts of the egg used as food ingredients. The eggshell is often considered as useless. Usually, this part of the egg is thrown away after the eggwhite and yolk are taken from it and used. Although, there are some who used eggshells as ornaments, they are few, and this practice is not common. Study shows that the eggshell contains calcium carbonate - a form of limestone that can be converted to chalk – that material that we use in writing on the blackboards. The purpose of this research is to produce a chalk that is non-toxic and therefore safe for school children, teachers, and other people who use chalk in their activities. The success of this study will contribute to the health of the general public.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The sidewalk chalk from an eggshell can be used in various ways by many people such as students, teachers, and anyone who wants to use it. Unlike the common chalk which is used at school, this sidewalk chalk will not produce dust which can be harmful to the health because it has no calcium sulphate which produces the chalk dust. According to Wikipedia, chalk, marble, and limestone are all forms of calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the common compounds of calcium. It is heated to form quicklime (CaO), which is then added to water (H2O). This forms another material known as slaked lime (Ca(OH)2), which is an inexpensive base material used throughout the chemical industry including the chalk that we use every day. Since according to study, the egg shell contains high level of calcium, it can be processed using water and certain carbon compound to produce chalk. The

Calcium carbonate, CaCO3,is one of the most abundant minerals on the Earth. More than 4% of the Earth’s crust is composed of calcium carbonate. It is a major component in limestone, marble, seashells, bedrock, etc. Limestone and marble have been among the most widely used building materials for more than 5 000 years, from the pyramids in Egypt to the Parthenon in Greece and the Taj Mahal in India. In many places, limestone is also the foundation of our Earth—literally, since it is forms both bedrock and mountain ranges. Calcium carbonate dissolves in water to only a limited extent, but its solubility is greatly enhanced when the water is acidic. The gradual dissolution of marble and limestone, as well as coral and seashells, in acids is due to acid− base neutralization. The products of the neutralization reaction between calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid, for example, are calcium chloride and carbonic acid, or H2CO3.…

Toothpaste usually contains around 20% of calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate acts an abrasive in toothpaste and helps to remove dental plague as well as food remains stuck in between the teeth. The rationale of conducting this experiment of finding out the amount of calcium carbonate in toothpaste is to make sure that the percentage of calcium carbonate is around 20%. If the percentage is more than 20%, the enamel protecting our teeth will wear off and become thinner resulting in decolouration and teeth sensitivity.…

The main component of chalk is calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ), a form of limestone. Limestone deposits develop as coccoliths (minute calcareous plates created by the decomposition of plankton skeletons) accumulate, forming sedimentary layers. Plankton, a tiny marine organism, concentrates the calcium found naturally in seawater from .04 percent to 40 percent, which is then precipitated when the plankton dies.…
