“Well..” He said as if the alcohol had no effect on him whatsoever, “my family has a long history in Whale Cove, my great-great-great grandmother was born here and raised her entire family here, I lived here as a kid… But then I moved.” his voice trailed off as the path led them straight into the dark depths of the white woods, of course, Evelyn didn’t even notice.
“Wha-wait a minute… Now, I’ve lived here my whole life and… I don’t remember you. I would have remembered you. I think I would remember that cute face.” her face grew white with the realization of …show more content…
what her drunk mind just inadvertently said. What the hell? she screamed in her mind.
Sebastian stopped in his tracks and looked around the small clearing they were standing in. The full moon shone bright and made the entire clearing glow in a silver light. Suddenly Sebastian fell to the ground crying out in pain; his body twisted in an unusual manner. Evelyn reached out and touched his shoulder, his skin felt like it was on fire and as if it were ready to split open. “Sebastian, are you okay?” she asked pulling her hand back. A howl in the distance drew her attention to the five wolves that had encircled them.
“Sebastian! Sebastian, get up!” she pulled on his arm again, “we need to get out of here!” tears streamed down her face, mixing with the dirt that smeared her face. Beneath her hands she felt his body contort and break in unnatural positions, “do—do you need me to get help?” she begged collapsing into a heap. Sebastian punched the ground, then arched his back howling up toward the moon. His nose and jaw stretched turning into a snout, jet black fur grew out of his body and his hands grew claws then turned into paws. Evelyn rose to her feet horrified and ran in the opposite direction from the black wolf that took Sebastian’s place. Before she could reach the edge of the clearing two wolves snapped at her legs tripping her to the ground, hitting her head on a rock; blood instantly trickled down her face onto the dress.
Evelyn tried to crawl away from the wolf that was running at her but it was too late he was already on top of her sinking his large fangs into her arm. Evelyn screamed in pain cradling her arm; the wound felt like it was on fire. The pain was too great, she slowly slipped into the darkness.
A rustling sound in the bushes startled the dirty, naked girl; she lifted her head from the dress and crouched even lower to the ground waiting for whatever lurked in the tree line. The familiar scent of wolf and Sebastian filled her nose, “you can come out now.” Evelyn called into the trees, “no need to hide when I can smell you.” she quickly slipped into the dress and stood up.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to lurk.” he paused, “I wanted to make sure our new Alpha is okay. I know the first change is always the worst.” Sebastian was dressed in a black tunic and gray linen pants; he slowly walked toward her barefoot, hardly noticing the twigs cracking underfoot.
“What do you mean change? I didn’t change, I was as naked as a baby,” she said with a stern voice, no twinge of fear whatsoever. Then her mind finally her the word. Alpha. “Did you just call me Alpha?” Even though she didn’t understand what the word meant, she felt a power over him she had never felt before.
“That wolf you hit with your truck… She was our Alpha, Bryn. When an alpha’s time is up he or she will choose a predecessor. The alpha must choose and it must be a human.” The word human sunk into her mind something she knew she was no longer. “Bryn could sense that you felt like you didn’t belong. She knew that you are strong and stubborn. Bryn knew that you could lead this pack to a great place someday. That’s why she chose you.”
“So she was following me?” Evelyn smirked crossing her arms in front of her chest.
“Well, no. She saw you once near the white woods, at that barn we met at. It only took one look for her to know that you are the right fit for this pack.”
“So she committed suicide in front of my truck?” Normally Evelyn’s head would be pounding from so much stress; but today, her mind was calm and clear. “Why didn’t she just bite me herself?”
“It doesn’t work that way. In order for you to take over as Alpha, Bryn had to sacrifice herself to you. In ancient times there would be a ritual where a human knowingly and willingly sacrificed themselves to the wolf. But modern times have gotten tricky, no sacred swords or willing humans. So now we choose the people who don’t belong in society; who stick out among the rest; feel lost when they are sitting in their own homes. Bryn could feel that in you. I can feel it too.
“Now the second part of the sacrifice happens after the alpha passes.
We surround her body and the human kneels down with their head on the body. Which you did so very cutely with your tiny sobs, I must say the others didn’t think you would cut it. But I knew different.” He smiled looking out past the stream a doe and its fawn, they spotted the couple and ran swiftly in the opposite direction, Evelyn fought the urge to chase them. “Now the second in command, which is me, bites the human when the full moon is at its highest and the change is forced upon us all. That is what you remember, and I’m truly very sorry for that. Usually, we change before so it is not as painful, but I needed you in that sacred spot in order to complete the ritual.” he looked into her eyes and she could feel he meant every word he has said and deep down she knew everything he said was true, about her and her life. “You must be hungry, our manor is just over that ridge past the clearing. And. The family is dying to meet you.” The excitement bubbled out of him like he was a puppy waiting to
play.
“Family.” She whispered. “What about my family?” Her heart sank into her stomach but she was still calm, “What about my mom and dad… My brother… My sister. What about my dog, Marco?” Evelyn’s mind wandered back to all the trips they took as a family and wondered what they will do without her. Sebastian came close and took her hands, surprisingly his hands were smooth and soft, not a hard days work on them.
“You will never be able to see them again.” he finally said. She looked up at him wishing tears would come and make her world blur so she didn’t have to face it. “Evelyn. You do not age and will never age until the day you choose a predecessor. You can see your family for a time but you will have to say goodbye eventually and that will be just as hard as just disappearing out of sight out of mind. They will think you ran away. They know how tough their life has been on you. They would understand.” she looked down at her mud riddled feet and blood stained body.
“Why am I so bloody?” she questioned walking over to the stream to wash off wondering why it smelled very different from her own.
“Oh, that’s easy. You took down a deer. A twelve point buck to be exact, all by yourself.” His face was so proud; he even hopped on his toes. “See? You were born for this.” Evelyn rolled her eyes because she knew it was true; for the first time in her life she felt normal and free and the idea of leaving her parents didn’t seem so bad after all. “Now come, time to eat.” he turned and ran into the white woods, changing as he leaped into the air; his black coat danced across the white canvas of the woods. Evelyn looked back toward the direction she knew was home and sniffed the air, the faint aroma of her mother’s patchouli oil lingered across her nose.
“Goodbye.” she whispered and leaped into the air transforming into a red wolf, the rarest and most beautiful wolf of them all.
