What's Eating Gilbert Grape
In My Father’s House

The story/play was just amazing and the actors acted like a boss. I have been watching plays since I was in high school, so far this is the best play I have watched. Well, besides from that the content of the story is very interesting. So the play started with Santamaria’s family in Negros Oriental. The Santamria family has 3 sons, the eldest joined the guerilla movement, the youngest to the USAFFE, and the middle son to collaboration with the Japanese. In act 1 scene 1 the Santamarias Carlos and Amanda, their two sons Miguel and Franco and their daughters-in-law Isabel and Cristy-are enjoying New year’s Eve. In act 1 scene 2 the Japanese occupies Dumagute City which made the family terrified. Captain Haroda (Japanese) went to the house of the Santamarias to make an extraordinary demand. In Act 2 scene’s 1, 2, & 3 Farnco, Emilio, Cristy, & Marissa where involved in a crucial part of the story. In act 3 scene’s 1, 2, & 3 it’s the part where I saw my 1st real live kissing scene Hahaha, well no one expected that part to happen. In this part it’s where the brothers lost their brother due to war on because of the different groups they’ve joined. In this part allied forces won. The family rejoices-but things may never be the same again. Now there’s this question in the beginning that kept on ringing in my mind. “Who is a hero and who is a traitor”. Well its up for you to find out, you will need to watch it because its worth watching than telling you what happened in the play.

Arnie Grape was referred to this agency by Sheriff Jerry Farrell of the Endora Police Department. He was concerned about Arnie's continued lack of supervision. Sheriff Farrell stated that Arnie was taken into custody for climbing the water tower in Endora, but later released to his mother, Bonnie Grape. This was not Arnie's first time climbing the tower, and Sheriff Farrell informed me that he had given previous warnings to Bonnie Grape about the incidents. I was informed that Arnie is mentally challenged, and that the police department was afraid of Arnie's safety and the safety of those that try to retrieve him from the tower. Bonnie Grape was informed of the referral by the police department.…

Milcha Sanchez-Scott uses drama and humor to shape this play whilst the help of language, ethnicity, and her ability to capture the audience's attention at the right time. While Margarita is swimming through the Pacific Ocean, her family is trailing behind her in a boat. During the beginning part of the play everything is calm and the audience begins to get to know a little about the family. The language the characters speak plays an incredible role within the play because it's mostly in English and Spanish, which gives the audience a sense of who the Suarez family really is. The language signifies that the characters are Cuban whilst providing the reader with enough information to understand the Eduardo and Aida Suarez's(Margarita's mother and father) daily life struggle and their stories of traveling to America. They fled Cuba to come to America for what most would call, the American dream.…

Truth, honestly and candour is the central idea of the play. The idea of truth, telling the truth and recognising the truth is located in the interrelationship between the two women during the war. An example of this is when Sheila reveals her secret of ‘giving herself up to a Jap’ to save Bridie which has been kept hidden since the war. In the scene, Misto uses a combination of techniques such as lighting, music and sound to convey emotions from the audience as Sheila tells her story. The scene concludes with both characters isolating in separate spotlights and the music plays to the audience as the scene ends with tension and suspense. This then shapes the perception and meaning of concerns and experiences to make the audience think of the interrelationship between the two women and the heroic deeds of women during the war.…

Guilt. “A cognitive or emotional experience that occurs when a person believes that they have violated a moral standard and bears significant responsibility for that violation.” Guilt is portrayed a great deal in Lasse Hallström’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993). Guilt is depicted within the film through Gilbert as he is indecisive between leaving and staying, it is depicted through Bonnie as she believes that she is an incompetent wife and parent, and through Betty Carver, who holds herself responsible for the death of her husband. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape follows the trapped and tedious life of Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp), through his struggles with responsibility when caring and providing for his family and mentally disabled brother…

The Glass Menagerie was written by Tennessee Williams and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was written by Peter Hedges. The first main difference between these two works is that The Glass Menagerie was a memory play that premiered in 1944 and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was a novel in 1991 that was later adapted into a film in 1993. The main factor in The Glass Menagerie is that the characters and the story mimic the author’s own life, which he includes himself, his mother and sister as the representation of the characters in the play and how his emotions are depicted towards his family. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is separate and not inspired by the author’s life, but instead about a man named Gilbert that has to take care of his disabled brother and his obese mother, which gets in the way when love walks into his life. The similarities and differences that both stories have are the characters and the themes, such as escapism and the interactions between the main character and his family.…

This novel really stirred my emotions, especially in the beginning. For example, Candelario works at a restaurant owned by a man named Don Gustavo. Candelario is the salad maker and what taught, by Don Gustavo himself, how to make a perfect Caesar salad for his customers. The doctor and his wife came in and both ordered salads and Candelario made the salads exactly to Don’s instructions, but the customers were not pleased. Since they were not pleased Don fired Gustavo on the spot that night. This made me very angered with Don and people like Don. It sucks when you do something right but then someone is displeased so all of a sudden it was the wrong thing to do. In this situation, Don was definitely the bad man and people should…

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is not a happy book. The Author, Junot Diaz, does a great job fooling the reader into believing the story is about the De Leon family, specifically Oscar who is an over weight nerd trying to find the love of his life, but due to a family “fuku” or curse Oscar is having a lot of trouble doing so. Instead, the story actually portrays the dark history of the Dominican Republic under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. Upon reading the stories of Oscar’s relatives the reader feels a powerful message of fear and oppression due to the actions of the Trujillo regime. Even after the demise of Trujillo, people were so accustomed to the lifestyle they had to live during his regime, that Trujillo’s practices and dictator concepts still existed and is portrayed by Oscars run in with the captain after his relationship with Ybon.…

    2. To me the play meant a lot, because it showed the many dysfunctions of families, and consequences if they didn’t resolve them. And I know my family like all families have their problems, and it was funny to relate to the sister, and watch her forget things, because I am always forgetting things, also I play the cello so I guess I found it easier to connect to her because of that aspect. Also I sometimes end up being the voice of reason, when my family tends to get into it, and I am on the sidelines, so I found myself drawn to the son, as he narrated, and how neutral he was about everything, he was the only sane one. And my dad isn’t as bad as Boo or his father, but he likes to have a drink with dinner every night, so it is something that could happen if he drank more, but probably wont. I…

The definition of family often tends to mean different things among varied groups of people. Violence, like family, also varies in definition and carries different cultural values and significance. Regardless of one’s meaning of family or violence, these two things in many ways influence and impact people’s lives differently. Hector Tobar’s novel, The Tattooed Soldier shows the impact of violence on people who each see family from a different standpoint. Furthermore, in the film Sin Nombre directed by Cary Fukunaga we see a different type of family heavily integrated with violence. Both Sin Nombre and The Tattooed Soldier demonstrate that the loss of family becomes the roots of all violence. In both works the main characters, Antonio and El Casper, lose their families through violence, which creates…

Women are foreseen as very supportive and in the play one offers to help another financially. This determines that women are always there for each other and support one another without thinking twice. Even though it is evident by the type of job they have, that they do not have money, these women do not hesitate to help. This right here is the kind of vision people use to make stereotypes that women in Mexican culture are very supportive however, in the film some scenes might confuse the reader because it is shown that men are more supportive than women. Patricia Cardosa uses men as the supporter in the film to show that not all women are supportive and that men can be as supportive as women. In the film, Ana’s tetchier played a big role in her life because he is the one that supported her and even encouraged her to apply and attend college. Her teacher talked to Ana’s parents to convince them that she should attain a higher education. Also Ana’s father is the one that wants her to attend college and he even takes her to the airport. Her grandfather though he was present in most of the film supported Ana when she had a boyfriend. He helped Ana go on dates with Jimmy, her boyfriend so that her parents will not notice. The play and film contradict each other because one shows how women are supportive and the other shows that men are actually supportive. Either way, both the play and the film help with the creation of stereotypes…

When I finally know the personality of Rafael Dacanay I’m so amazed by him. How he put his own life in danger just to protect his people. He has been tortured by pouring gallons of water in his mouth forcing him to show the hideout of the rebeled… the group that fight against the colonizers.. He said nothing about where the rebeled is hiding but when American threatened him that they will kill his wife.. he had no choice. When they’re on the woods, Rafael tried to trick the Americans by showing a fake hideout and said that maybe they weren’t there at that time. The Americans get angry and tied him.. When they are on they’re way back to the barrio .. they were ambushed by the rebeled that killed some of the Americans.. At first I thought that the rebeled will save Rafael Dacanay for his execution but it’s not.. It also makes me angry to the American who execute Rafael.., why they have to shoot Rafael who is already hanged.. I’m very inspired by Rafael Dacanay not just because of how he took good care the safety of his people but also how he is being loyal to his ally especially to his country/ our country.. the Philippines.. He is a Hero.…
