His first major achievement was adapting to his new surroundings. He learned the survival skills that he would need to stay alive. He accomplished the simple tasks of learning how to eat to the more complex of learning how to fight. He did this by observing the other dogs in the team. His next achievement was when he fought Spitz and killed him. He then became the team leader and was a strong leader. One of his most impressive achievements was when John Thornton had placed a wager on him to pull the sled weighed down by a thousand pounds of flour. Buck broke out the sled by himself and carried the sled for a hundred yards. Another one of Buck’s achievements was killing the alpha male moose. This is a major achievement because it took days and creativity to kill the moose. Bucks last achievement was becoming the leader of a wolf pack. Initially, Buck’s life was changed in an instant when he was dog napped and given to the man with the red sweater. He learned the law of the club and not to challenge it if he wanted to survive. He learned to survive by observing the other dogs; he observed how to survive the bitter cold and to protect his food from the others. Perhaps the most important detail he learned was how to fight. This skill taught him how to survive the other dogs and gave him the ability to hunt for food for himself. When he fought Spitz, he was beaten badly and was outfought. Buck used his resourcefulness to overcome his inexperience by pretending to do one move and instead bit Spitz’s fore leg until it broke. When Buck killed Spitz, he assumed the new role of leader and that was just another step in his journey of self awareness. The next morning Francois placed Sol-leks as lead dog, Buck objected to it fiercely. Sol-leks did not want the role after Buck terrorized him but Francois insisted upon it. Buck had a unique way to solve this problem, when Francois tried to harness Buck, he backed away. Perrault and Francois chased him for about an hour until they gave up and put Buck in as lead.
