What Are Social Norms In Communication
Even though, I knew my mom would be asleep when I got home, I still texted her and let her know I was going to be late for curfew just in case she woke up through the night. I knew I could possibly get in trouble, but I would rather have gotten in trouble than have my mom be worried about my whereabouts. In the end, I faced no consequences because I was honest and maintained communication with her. Communicating with my father has always been a bit more difficult and different than communicating with my mother. I attribute this to out gender and more specifically, societal norms that determine how to communicate as men and women. There are certain topics or situations I do not discuss with him and only discuss with my mom due to her being able to understand more. …show more content…
For instance, I was upset with my best friend at the time and I was attempting to explain to him what happened. Half-way through the explanation, he cut me off and in summation felt as if the entire argument was dumb and I needed to just apologize. At the time, he did not understand that first, I just wanted someone to be there to listen and second, he should’ve been more supportive of my opinions and actively listened to me. These patterns within my family dynamic have impacted who I communicate with and how I go about doing so. I have found based on gender norms that are societally based I can have much more deep and open conversations with my female friends, peers, and instructors. I have found that honesty and respect is always the best policy to follow when communicating with others. Within both of my households, I learned when communicating with others it is very important to listen. My mother taught me this with her actions while my father taught me this with his lack thereof at times. This has proved to be incredibly beneficial as I work toward obtaining my post-secondary

Communication style instantly changes even in family depending on the ages and relationships. For example if I am communicating with my parents or in-laws I needed to be more respectful and obedient. This communication style will apply with them in any situation. But communicating with my children requires directive, kind, caring and assertive. When it comes to my husband I am comfortable, free and at times intimates. Friends, classmate, and coworker, bosses, and instructor’s communications are more involvement in activities of academic, social, productive or quality of work, and learning mode. Emotions and environment can play a major role in communicational habits. If someone grow up in abusive environment that person’s emotion is going to give that person some abnormal communicational habits for whole life. On the other hand if someone is growing up with guardians with high education, care, discipline, good redirections. That person is going to follow the same steps of his/her not only communication style but also life style.…

In the age of puberty the communication once had from children to teens changes. As a teen, the male student naturally started hanging out with more males than females. This became the difference between male and female conversations. As males get older they bond more in experiences rather than conversations. Unlike their female counterparts who engage in conversation to bond. Females when communicating like to have others listen to the problem only, unlike males who like to talk about problems and give a solution to the problem rather than just listen to the problem. This is where the problem manifests for communication between male and female counterparts within the teenage…

For this assignment, you will violate a social norm. In a normal functioning society, people are expected to behave and respect social norms. A norm is a set of informal understandings which regulate the behavior of members of a society (Norms). Norms are accepted by groups of members in a society. Folkways are norms that are experienced by all members of society in our daily lives. If a folkway is broken or, society does not make a significant outcome of it. It is still noticed by members. For Example, People wait in lines to purchase goods in every store. If a person were to skip in front of people in the line, the group that is the line will see that as a breaking of a folkway. Someone may speak up and make the person go the back of the line, or people might not say anything. Regardless, skipping the line will be observed by the members of the society.…

Growing up, family played a significant role in my life. I can truly say that I am who I am today because of them. I was taught that for as long as I live the right way, not hurting anyone along the way, and being thankful for what I have, I will be happy. There were times that I have made the wrong choices, but for the most part, I didn’t forget my parent’s teachings. For instance, getting in trouble with the law for fighting or being disruptive, I eventually grew out of it and learned that maybe violence is not the way to do things. For the most part, having a decent conversation or as simple as talking about the problem will eventually solve the misunderstanding and everything can end well.…

The encounters are determined by assumptions and expectations, which can also limit the effectiveness of relationships. The two theories identify the tensions that surround interactions, especially within social contexts. While the Relational Dialectics Theory deals with conflicting values between the outwardly expressed and the individual worldviews of individuals in different forms of relationships, the Genderlect Style Theory focuses on specific gender attributes that govern communication and interactions. At any rate, these communication theories, when skillfully applied, can place one at an advantageous position in…

In this chapter, Floyd (2011) discusses the many ways that gender affects interpersonal relationships. He describes is as a “defining feature of our identity, shaping the way we think, look, and communicate” (p. 51). It is explained that each gender culture puts emphasis on different parts of the relationship. Women come to value communication and closeness, while men value taking part in activities together (Floyd, 2011, p. 57). This makes sense when I think about how I communicate with men versus with women.…

First of all, we spend most of our time with are our family. Especially we all are affected by parents. We learned behavior from them when we were babies so it constitutes a big part of one’s personality. For example, one of my old friends he always does not listen to others by habit, he just talks a subject whatever he want talk in conversation with friends. Later, I found out that he is grown up environment which is affected by his dad who always ignores his mom in their conversation. The friend told me that his dad is hard drinker as well as dad is usually come home late, and their family doesn’t talk a lot to each other. Therefore, I realized that it is very important parent’s behavior to kids as well as it is not related to be a good listener not by gender through this example.…

Many individuals may believe that gender stereotypes and typical norms amongst the sexes are long gone, but these traditional views for both men and women, according to society, are still quite prevalent today. This human experience, that men and women both have specific roles to play in society, has been around since the beginning of time and will most likely continue for decades and centuries to come. Men are viewed, by societies standards, as being strong, dominant (at least more dominant than a women), leaders, and they should always restrain from showing weakness. Ronald Levant, a physiologist, explains in his article Men and Masculinity that men are prone to be raised as their fathers were,…

Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American poet once wrote “the value of a dollar is social, as it is created by society.” Throughout time society has become a “parent” to the many people. Society is the most influential aspect of life in today’s world. Many factors influence a person’s life, such as the media, work and school. Going back to Emerson, people have taken the place of the dollar in his quote. An individual is no longer valued by what he thinks of himself, he is valued by what society thinks of him. What does this mean? In order to be accepted in society there are “social norms” that one has to follow. If one does not live by these norms, then you are be ridiculed and you become the outsider for this.…

We live in a society where one abides by social norms, if not you may be looked at funny or people will even talk about you. So let’s begin, what’s considered a “social norm”? According to Your Dictionary, “Social Norms are said to be the laws of behavior that are acceptable to a group or society. Norms tend to change depending upon the environment, but If broken one could be looked at differently or face consequences. Social Norms are also group-held beliefs about how members should/ should not behave in a given context. Some examples of social norms are: Saying hello when you answer the telephone, respecting others personal space, stopping at a red light and driving when its green, chewing food with your mouth closed, etc. Social norms are important because it sets the stage of how people are expected to act in society. Growing up your parents, teachers, and care- givers are the ones who inforce these unwritten rules in you. Social norms relate to ethnocentrism and cultural relativism because one’s ethnic group, religion, and race all play a part in how one behaves in society. For example if I’m said to be a Christian women, I know that it wouldn’t be okay for me to come to church dressed in a tight mini-skirt with high heels on. That wouldn’t be appropriate for a church setting instead a club, or bar setting.…

Personal space. All people value this as social boundary and create appropriate norms. As we were assigned this task of violating a social norm in public, I began to consider all the strange personal space norms our society and campus holds. For example, while riding the bus if there a few people on it, you are typically going to sit two seats or more away from one another. However, when the bus is packed to the brim, which is the only time you are permitted to sit right beside a person or stand right up next to them. I found this fascinating; how in our campus society, people try to stay as far away from each other as possible. Moreover, the reason behind why I decided to violate this norm on the way home from class.…
