European powers gained colonial rule for political, religious, and economic reasons. European powers obtained colonial rule on account of the pressure of a growing population, the creation of new markets for the products of mines and factories, and to avoid civil war. The only way to do these things is to become an imperialist. Colonial conquest involved many factors, which ultimately would lead European powers to pursue colonization in Africa, Asia, and Oceania through economic advancements, military force, and colonial settlement to establish their sphere of influence in the region. Generally, European imperialists establish colonial rule through economic penetration and some military interference. Although rivalries among other European powers and local colonial governments made it almost impossible to cooperate, European imperialists were willing to take the risk of war. “The military advantage that the Europeans had was in their drill and practice, organization, and command structure.” During the 19th century, the Europeans had an immense advantage in firepower, resulting from the recently invented machine guns and repeating rifle. For example, Hilaire Belloc pointed out that the “Europeans advantage was the Maxim gun [an automatic machine gun].” One of the wars that the European colonists fought in was the Boer war which was fought in 1899-1902, where the Boers (white successors of the preliminary Dutch settlers in South Africa) fought against the British and lost. In addition, it took the French 16 years to conquer the West African Empire. In the African case, between “1875-1900, six European powers fought each other, and effectively controlled all of Africa.” There was intense bloody military action, some even lasting decades.
