The Revolutionary War was expensive for both sides. The British had to fund the building of many ships to get overseas, weapons to all their soldiers and their uniforms. To help the British recover from past wars, they raised taxes for America. Britain charged America with Taxes like the Stamp Act, which made a tax on every paper product America bought. In return, the Americans refused to pay those taxes. Britain needed this money from previous war debt but it made colonist mad and they boycotted products. When colonist boycotted these items, Britain got mad and sent sitting soldiers over to watch the colonist. Americans boycotted things from Britain it caused Britain to lose money in trade. At first France was skeptical about helping America because they thought they would lose since Britain was such a big country with a lot of power already. France did not think that America could stand alone as a country and break away from British rule. When America formed the Declaration of Independence, showing that they were their own nation, it showed France that America was capable of being on their own. The battle of Saratoga was also a turning point in the Revolution. America decided they should divide and attack Britain because that would work better than the normal “fighting position”. Since America won the Battle of Saratoga this showed France that America could win and could fight, so it gave them confidence to join the American Revolution.
