Mostly because of the fact that trade had been revived, and people in the Middle Ages were pretty gross, ("It was not unusual for people to go for months and months without changing clothes or taking a bath"(Ponticelli).) the plague spread really fast, and really far. Most people believed that the plague was started in Central Asia, and was spread along the Silk Road by fleas and rats. The rodents that lived on merchant ships most likely brought the disease into Europe on these trading boats. The plague was a terrible disease "Plague causes fever and a painful swelling of the lymph glands called buboes, which is how it gets its name. The disease also causes spots on the skin that are red at first and then turn black"(The Black Death: Bubonic Plague). Rashes, headaches and chills were also common. On average, 5-7 days after the first symptoms were noticed, the victim would die (The Black Death). So many people lived in fear and even died because of this disease, including an estimated 800 people a day in France (Nelson). Often times whole villages were destroyed by the plague, leaving not a single person left. Because of the plague, the populations in Europe and Asia significantly decreased "China’s population was reduced by nearly ½"(Ponticelli), and 24 million people died in Europe. Many believed that the plague was a punishment from God, others thought that fleeing to the country side would save them. Some blamed…

One place involved with it was Greek city-state of Athens, which was affected by new and unidentified diseases, it killed about 25% of its army and weakened the city-state for good. The widespread diseases also affected the Han Dynasty China and the Roman Empire, but contacted on the Silk Roads all across Eurasia was basically promoted. The capital of the city of the Byzantine Empire, lost thousands of people per day throughout 40 days. The same death count troubled China and parts of the Islamic world. The third time was in 1665, it was called the Great Plague of London. A pandemic is the term used when a disease occurs more than once, affects a vast region, and affects an enormous amount of people. The Black Death caused the greatest amount of damage, out of all three. Although the Justinian Plague and the Great Plague of London were disastrous, the Black Death was the most disastrous pandemic of them all because it killed the most people, spread the furthest, and had the worst effect on the economy.…
To begin with, during the time of the Black Death, the medical community knew enough to believe that the plague could be treated; however their knowledge on how to treat it was limited. Various doctors had the infected hand toads around their necks, alive or dead, “whose venom should within a few days draw out the poison of the disease” (H. de Rochas 10). Additional doctors attempted to find the source of the plague. One doctor named Erasmus believed the Black Death was spread from the filth in the streets and homes. His perspective came from the fact that there was very little hygiene during the time of the plague. Peasants bathed maybe once a year, and even nobles only bathed twice a year. Erasmus was looking for a possible way for the plague to be created, and was not far off. We know now that the plague was a bacterial infection, spread by fleas that had been infected via rats. In an attempt to stop the plague, people were quarantined in their villages and the infected were often buried in their homes. Giovan Filippo, a Sicilian physician, had the motto “Gold, fire, the gallows”. Gold to fund the pest houses that quarantined the sick, the gallows to punish the people who violated health regulations, and…
For the people who could afford it, they would be treated by a medical physician whom would have been trained at a university. But this didn't mean that there treatments were effective. most people would have seen a barber, a barber surgeon or a wise woman about treatments. A barber would perform dental or bloodletting procedures. A barber surgeon could perform a wide range of procedures. A wise woman would treat the poor people or people who couldn't get to a barbershop. Art was influenced by the plague. With drawings called danse macabre depicted the cause of Black Death as people being taken away by skeletons. With an analysis of primary and secondary sources, the cures for the Black Death were very unusual. for instance, “bloodletting was believed to cure illness and prevent diseases such as the Black Death.leeches were sometimes used to suck out blood; or a person's vein was cut and a set volume of blood was collected in a dish” (oxford big ideas history 8: Australian curriculum pg 316). Some of the most unusual cures were; drinking rotten treacle, living in a sewer, eating a spoonful crushed emeralds, washing yourself with urine, rubbing yourself with a living chicken, letting a leech suck your blood, smelling herbs and spices (aromatherapy) etc. lots of these cures are absurd but some of them like aromatherapy and leech therapy are still used today. Pope Clement VI had the ideas to sit between two large flames. This proved effective as the flames cleansed the air and stopped the yersinia pestis from spreading. There were a lot of unusual and unhelpful cures for the Black Death in medieval…
