Chinese Cinderella is a depressing story because of all the hardships Adeline had to endure. Some of the hardships that she faced included the fact that she was not loved or wanted by the majority of her family. For example, Adeline says, “Now they know the pathetic truth! Unwanted and unloved by my own parents.” (Yen Mah pg. 116) This evidence shows the self- loathing attitude Adeline had developed because of the pressure and uncaring nature of her parents. Also, this evidence identifies that Adeline has no faith that she will ever be wanted by her parents. Another example is, “Big sister once told me, ‘Mama died giving birth to you. If you hadn't been born, Mama would still be alive. She died because of you, you are bad luck.’” (Yen Mah pg. 13) This quote explains the source of hatred the older siblings have created for Adeline. This quote is important because it shows the soul reason why the siblings resent her.
