The short and long term effects of concussions can be devastating to the human mind. Not only does the brain suffer long term physical damage but many players often suffer from long term mental problems. A prime example of someone who had been affected by head trauma was former linebacker Junior Seau. Recently “a team of scientists who analyzed the brain tissue of renowned NFL linebacker Junior Seau after his suicide last year have concluded the football player suffered a debilitating brain disease caused by two decades worth of hits to the head” (ABCNews). Junior Seau who had a 20 year NFL career was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after his death. The real question is what could’ve the NFL done to prevent such a terrible tragedy or did they not have the capability to control what happened to him? The NFL has said many times that it did not intentionally hide the dangers of concussions from players and is doing everything it can to protect them. With the focus on head injuries in football being put under a microscope the past few seasons, the NFL is taking drastic measures trying to find solutions that will help in the…
In any sprinting event, there is a definite need to have a fresh start. Safety in sports is a vital issue not only in football, but also in every sport. Concussions are amongst the numerous neurological injuries which might occur during football. This essay attempts to determine the safest start position among the 3 different sprint start positions, namely a 4-point position, a 3-point position, and a 2-point position, via comparing their relevant biomechanical…

The National Football League has a bigger problem on their hands that go beyond the gridiron. Concussions in football leads to greater health risks later in life, because of the trauma that is put towards the head area which leads to more serious head injuries. According to Simon Flynn, Andre Waters, who was a former player in the National Football League, and who died at age of only forty-four had a brain of an eighty-five-year-old. If more preventions were in place in football then Water's’ chance of having an unhealthy brain at a young age would have been lower. The NFL (National Football League) has a bigger issue to worry about rather than who wins or loses on the field, but because of concussions and all the health issues with some former players. Now, the National Football League has a problem bigger than what is on the field, they have to deal with off the field issues.…

Protection among our athletes is what is most important to both players, parents and coaches. Most individuals play sports to have fun, be competitive and win; one rarely ever hears an athlete say, “I’m going to play today to get hurt.” In order to protect ourselves and others, proper education on the sport at hand is necessary. In women’s lacrosse, younger athletes are not allowed to check. When girls reach the high school level the league permits legal checking. The issue at hand, is that the players are not educated prior to entering high school therefor the form and technique is never instilled properly. When an athlete does not know how to properly and safely do something, it can lead to harmful play in general. If coaches teach girls…
