In my opinion, the differences between 1958 life and today’s life are both very different and very similar. The most significant changes, in my opinion, is that women themselves didn't want to change until they saw it happening in a positive way. For example, when Betty turned color she was devastated and she didn't want her husband or anyone to see her that way. People were going to college and women were doing stuff with their lives. People were becoming more independent. We even saw that Betty now had a choice between her husband George or her new loverboy Bill. Even “Bud” and “Mary Sue” had better lives, “Mary” was going to college and “Bud” went home and back to being David and cared for his mother.
In summary, the Pleasantville movie did an amazing job portraying the differences and similarities between 1950’s life and today’s life. The lives are very similar but when they differ it is in an extreme. The lives of today and then can easily change and bend when new people are added to the population and new ideas are combined with the old. Neither Pleasantville or today’s life are necessarily ‘better’ just different, and either way, change can always be good once in
