Representatives will pick who will lead our country with each state only having one vote. The benefits of this system of electing a President, in my opinion, are many different things. For example, I think that this system gives a sense of each state having an opinion. I think that having electors is a good thing and it gives a sense of representation and it allows the Electoral College to maintain a federal system of government. Also, I think that this system makes the election more interesting because you never know whose going to win even though you voted. This is because even though someone may have won the popular vote; someone else can always win the Electoral College vote. The drawbacks of this system of electing a President, in my opinion, are many different things also.
For example, I think that a generous amount of people think that even if they vote its not going to count toward anything because we have electors. This ties into having “faithless” electors, which are electors who cast an Electoral College vote for someone other than the person pledged. Currently, twenty-four states have laws punishing these electors; however, when electors gain their position they have to take an oath. Another drawback is the possibility of electing a minority President. The only way for this to happen is if the country was divided politically and if the minorities name was heavily concentrated in only the states it needed to win. I think that the Electoral College shouldn’t be abolished. I think, personally, that it is a good system because it’s worked fine so far. I think it gives a sense of a good government and it shows representation. It works in our favor so that they can maintain and have some control over who wins the election, which is good because we don’t want someone to lead our country that will destroy
it. There are several different opinions on the Electoral College. However, this is the system that works for our country. Every President is going to have pros and cons no matter what way we go about electing them.
