The bosses of factories, mills and other work places didn’t care enough about their workers to make their work area safe enough for them to work safely without getting harmed. They cared more about their income then how the products were being made. As a result of this, “Women earned $1 to $3/day” (entry 6). Since people only made a few dollars a day, the whole family had to work in the factories as well. This made it so families couldn’t get a proper education and not have any free time since they had to work so much. These work rooms were hazardous and unsafe for the workers and caused many deaths and injuries in this time period. When there was an emergency, workers wouldn’t be able to get out of the building because they “Lacked fire escapes, sprinklers, and 94% of doors opened inward in 1910”(entry 6). For example in the Triangle factory, when the fire that killed many young workers broke out, they couldn’t escape because there weren’t enough fire escapes and many of the doors were locked. “Workers were crowded together” (entry 6) and spreaded illnesses quickly, so it make it difficult for workers to get their job done efficiently. Many immigrants were not welcomed into the country because of their differences between the Americans who lived there. They were “Looked down upon because they were poor and uneducated” (entry 10b). Immigrants from different countries couldn’t speak proper English so if they went to get an education or to learn about America’s culture, they would be turned down since they wouldn’t be able to understand what a teacher would be saying to them. A result of not having a proper understanding of English would be that they could walk into a job that could pay low money, so they would be very poor when working in America. But since many immigrants were willing to work for low paying jobs, “Chinese were a threat to Americans because they could steal their jobs” (entry 10b). Americans protested against having immigrants in their country because they were being easily replaced by immigrants who were more willing and able to work then many Americans at the time. Finally, a new law was placed called the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1822. “Chinese Exclusion Act of 1822 barred Chinese laborers from entering the country” (entry 12). This was unfair for immigrants who worked harder than others, but since so many Americans were against immigrant workers, they were outruled. Immigrants were treated unfairly when they entered
