Anonymity had a large effect on Dr. Jekyll in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde he continually chose to change into Mr. Hyde even though he knew it was wrong. The reason he did it was that while he was Mr. Hyde he was basically anonymous. Nobody knew that Dr.Jekyll was also this Mr.Hyde person so he could let out his demons without social or legal punishment, this was his outlet for his stresses and other problems. Their experiences with others cause much good and an equal amount of bad. “Although character has a genetic component, much of it is shaped by the nature and quality of our early relationships and experiences. Childhood role models, experienced as good, bad, or both, become embedded in the child’s developing personality, exerting their influence on adult character” (Serial Killers, Evil and Us, paragraph 17) When people have positive experiences with others they will likely grow up to do good things, and vice versa, when they have traumatic or scarring experiences they are likely to do more bad things. It is impossible to perfectly predict how someone will act based on their past alone, that is why the ability to empathize is a good indicator. If someone is good at empathizing they are probably going to do good things, “Empathy is the ability to put oneself in another’s psychological shoes, to sense what the other person may be thinking and feeling. But empathy without compassion is not enough.” (Serial Killers, Evil, and Us, paragraph 10) if the person is bad at empathizing or they empathize to exploit their victims they are probably not going to do good things.
