Amir and Baba leave their home and take refuge in Peshawar, Pakistan. At this point, he is no longer the wealthy Pashtun boy who is the son of a well-respected businessman. Now, Amir becomes nothing more than a refugee. This impacts him because he now knows what it is like to be a member of a lower social status. As they are traveling with a group of other refugees, they come across a checkpoint and one of the Russian soldiers says they can pass if the fellow woman refugee spends some time with them. Baba will not allow it, so the Russian soldier raises his firearm, but the others advise him not to shoot. This sets the bar for Amir; he knows what kind of bravery it takes to be his son. For all of Amir’s life, he has been trying to win his father’s pride, but has failed to do so everytime. After a while, they are in a gasoline tank of a fuel truck. The fumes inside makes it hard to breathe and Amir tries hard to be strong for Baba. Their final refuge area takes place in California and the slowly settle into their new lives. Amir becomes a novelist and loses his traces to Afghanistan; he is now becoming westernized. Amir, in a couple weeks, arrives in Pakistan. He meets Rahim and they talk about how it has been since Amir and Baba left. Amir is devastated by what Rahim has to tell him. Rahim says Hassan was Baba’s son, making Amir and Hassan half-brothers. He also said the Taliban have killed Hassan and his wife, leaving their son, Sohrab, in an orphanage. Amir immediately feels responsible for Hassan’s death and Sohrab’s unfortunate life. He thinks about Baba and knows what he is supposed to do. He is going to give Sohrab a better life for making Hassan’s terrible. On his journey to find Sohrab, he feels like a tourist in his own country. Everything he knew about Afghanistan is no longer the same. Amir finds the orphanage Sohrab was taken, but the manager said the Taliban has taken him a month ago. He finds Sohrab, but has to fight for him; he is now standing up for himself and his bravery would be honorable to Baba. He must fight Assef, now a ruthless Taliban official. Amir now wants to be an honorable Afghan for leaving the country during war. He is trying to become what he failed to be as a child, and successfully overcame Assef and is now an honorable
